MADISON, Wis. – The Carthage College men's tennis team won a thriller on Saturday in Madison, Wisconsin, as the Red Men edged out the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 5-4, by winning the final singles match of the day.
The win moves the Red Men to 5-5 on the season in dual meets, while the loss sends the Eagles to 5-3.
Carthage opened the day with a pair of wins in the doubles competition to take a 2-1 lead.
Herman Abban and
Pawel Jaworski cruised past Kyle Wogahn and Kyle McGrane [8-2] in number-one doubles and
Chris Conley and
Lukasz Jaworski defeated Matt Riley and Matt Lindsay in a tiebreaker, 9-8.
Herman and Pawel repeated with wins in the singles competition to put Carthage up 4-1 as they downed Kyle Wogahn [6-1, 7-5] and Kyle McGrane [6-2, 6-4] respectively.
However, La Crosse would make a ferocious comeback and after taking the singles four-through-six matches, the Red Men and Eagles were tied, 4-4, with just the number-three singles remaining.
Chris Conley prevailed for the Red Men in the final singles match of the day by besting Austin Stefanich [6-2, 7-5] to claim the match, 5-4.
Carthage will make a return to Janesville, Wisconsin next weekend in their final tune-up before a weeklong trip to Orlando for spring break. The Red Men will face the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. This winter, Carthage is 2-0 in Janesville with wins over Lake Forest College and Edgewood College on February 12
th.
