KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College softball team faced in-region foe Lake Forest College and Allegheny College on day two of their Florida stay on Saturday afternoon. A third-inning 8-0 hole was too much for the Lady Reds to overcome in a 9-4 loss to Lake Forest. Carthage rebounded with a 1-0 victory over Allegheny College behind pitcher
Amy Goldsmith, who surrendered just two hits in the complete-game shutout.
Â
The Lady Reds own a 3-3, 0-0 CCIW record six games into the 2017 season.
Â
Lake Forest College 9, Lady Reds 4
Â
Down 8-0 after three innings, Carthage cut their deficit in half with a four-run fourth inning.
Kristine Herdegen launched a two-run home run that also scored
Emmily Zinkiewicz, who reached on an error, to cut Lake Forest's lead to 8-2. Â
Darian Pelsor and
Brooke Sefcik followed that with a walk and single to put runners on the corners. Both players touched home plate off RBI-singles from
Kayla Uhwat-Vicicondi and
Lauren Jones to narrow the score to 8-4 after four innings.
Â
The Lady Reds had no more arsenal as Lake Forest notched their final run of the game off Abby King's bases-loaded single in the fifth inning to widen their lead to 9-4.
Â
Sefcik paced the Lady Reds with a two-for-three day at the plate. Zinkiewicz, Herdegen (home run), Uhwat and Jones each contributed hits to the Carthage lineup.
Â
Lady Reds pitchers
Katie Herron,
Rachel Fanella and
Amy Goldsmith all saw action in the circle against the Foresters.
Â
Lady Reds 1, Allegheny 0
Â
Goldsmith saw her no-hit bid come to an end in the fifth inning when Allegheny's Megan Hazlett laced a two-out single. The Carthage offense made up for that in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Lauren Jones (hit by pitch) and Goldsmith (infield error) each reached base. Juarez (Jones' pinch runner) advanced to third base on Uhwat's groundout before she touched home plate when
Jennifer Michuda reached on an error to give Carthage a 1-0 lead.
Â
Goldsmith went on to allow only one more base runner throughout the final two innings to secure the Lady Reds a 1-0 victory. She retired 21-of-24 batters faced in the contest.
Â
Carthage will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 19 in Clermont, Fla. against D'Youville College at 2:00 p.m. (ET), and in-region foe Benedictine University at 4:30 p.m. (ET).
