CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Carthage College men's tennis team found themselves on the positive end of a 5-4 decision on Friday, as the Red Men defeated Cornell College in Cedar Rapids to snap a two-match dual losing streak.
The win moves the Red Men to .500 in duals at 4-4, while Cornell falls to the same 4-4 mark on the year.
Carthage snatched an early lead as they have often done this season with wins in the number-one and two doubles competition.
Herman Abban and
Pawel Jaworski once again dominated in the one-doubles, defeating Gabriel Souza and Shoma Kishimoto, 8-2, while
Lukasz Jaworski and
Chris Conley topped Tucker Barnes and Aditya Goyal, 8-4.
After Cornell tied the match at 2-2 with a win in the number-four singles match, Carthage claimed the victory with wins by Abban, P. Jaworski and Conley in the singles one, two and three respectively.
In order of finish, Pawel defeated Hayden Dzurisin [6-0, 2-6, 6-1], Conley knocked off Kishimoto [6-3, 3-6, 6-2] and Herman clinched the Red Men win over Souza [6-4, 7-6 (8-6)].
Carthage returns to the courts in Cedar Rapids on Saturday as the Red Men take on the Central Region's number-nine team, Coe College. Saturday's doubles are set to start at 10:00 a.m.
