HOLLAND, Mich. – The Carthage College men's tennis team dropped a pair of heartbreaking matches on Saturday, losing both 5-4, to Hope College and Wabash College.
The pair of losses drops the Red Men to 3-4 on the season in dual matches, while Hope earned their first win of the season to move to 1-4 and Wabash improved to 5-3.
In the opening match on Saturday, Carthage started with a 2-1 lead after taking the number one and two doubles matches.
Herman Abban and
Pawel Jaworski dominated Mark Vanderstoop and Christian Rhodes [8-1] to take the one-doubles and
Chris Conley and
Lukasz Jaworski topped Andrew Klein and Danny Kroeze [8-5] in the two-doubles.
In the singles competition, Herman and Pawel earned the lone victories for the Red Men in single one and two respectively. Hope bested the Red Men however in the final four singles matches to win the match by one.
In the afternoon session against Wabash, Abban and P. Jaworski took the only doubles match for the Red Men [8-3] and entered the singles portion trailing 2-1.
Carthage had better success in the singles competition as they split the six singles matches, however it wasn't enough, as the Red Men were edged out again, 5-4.
For the Red Men,
Herman Abban won the singles-one match over William Reifeis [6-3, 6-3], Pawel knocked off Michael Makio [2-6, 6-2, 6-3] and
Chris Conley defeated Patrick McAuley in a tiebreaker [6-4, 4-6, (10-8)].
Next up for the Red Men, Carthage will head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for matches with Cornell College and Coe College next weekend.
