CHICAGO, Ill. – The Carthage College men's tennis team fell Tuesday in a rematch of the Red Men's NCAA tournament second round matchup from a season ago at the University of Chicago, 7-2.
The Red Men, currently ranked #16 in the central region, fall to 0-1 on the year in dual matches, while the Maroons, who are ranked second in the region and fifth in the country go to 1-0 on the season.
Carthage's number-one singles player
Herman Abban stayed unbeaten as the junior transfer defeated Ninan Kumar in singles [6-4, 6-4] and paired up with
Pawel Jaworski for one doubles to knock-off the Chicago duo of Nicolas Chua and David Liu [8-4].
Despite winning the second sets, P. Jaworski and
Chris Conley fell in three sets to Chicago's Erik Kerrigan and Charlie Pei in the number-two and number-three matches respectively.
Chicago took the remaining singles matches in straight sets.
Following this weekend off, the Red Men will head to St. Peter, Minnesota for the annual ITA Midwest Regional Tournament hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. Regional action is set to open on Friday September 30th, with finals set for Sunday, October 2nd.
