WHEATON, Ill. – It was a title day for the Carthage College Red Men tennis program, claiming their second consecutive College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title and 12th overall in program history Saturday with a 5-3 win over Wheaton College in the championship match.
It is head coach
Brady Lindsley's 11th title while at the helm of the men's tennis program and 14th overall between the men's and women's programs.
With the win, the Red Men earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship and improved to 21-6 in 2016.
Carthage fell behind out of the gate as
Pawel Jaworski and
Chris Conley dropped their singles-one match to Justin Ancona and Matt Steiner, 8-3. The Red Men bounced back to grab the final two doubles matches with wins by
Alex Boomgarden and
Ryan Jump; and
Lukasz Jaworski and
Fordy Leipold to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The thunder regained the lead with wins in the one and five singles matches to go up 3-2. However the Red Men came back in a fury with straight set wins by
Alex Ferruzzi [6-4, 6-1], Jump [7-5, 6-3] and Conley [7-6 (7-2), 6-4] to take the match 5-3.
P. Jaworski's match, which was in the third set, went unfinished after Carthage earned the championship decision.
Carthage will learn their NCAA Championship fate Monday during the NCAA's selection show and bracket release.
