Lady Reds Split With Green Knights In Regular-Season Finale

DE PERE, WIS.—The Carthage College softball team traveled to St. Norbert College for their regular-season finale on Friday afternoon. The Lady Reds are coming off an 8-1 and 16-2 sweep over Elmhurst College on April 29, which helped them stay in contention for the 2016 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Softball Tournament.

The Green Knights were looking to rebound from 11-3 and 10-2 losses to UW-Stevens Point on April 26. The Lady Reds stopped that from happening as they topped the Green Knights 4-3 in game one. Game two was a different story as St. Norbert rebounded with a 10-4 win.

The Lady Reds close the regular season with a 19-19, 7-7 CCIW record while the Green Knights own a 6-26, 5-11 MWC mark.

Lady Reds 4, St. Norbert 3

Shannon Walsh provided the first Lady Red hit of the game in the first inning, a bunt single. Walsh eventually stole second base, and advanced to third base on a groundout. A Green Knight wild pitch sent Walsh home to give Carthage a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Reds tacked on three more runs in the third inning. Vivian Juarez singled, and Amanda Grove reached on an error to put runners on first and second base. This set up Walsh's RBI-single that scored Juarez to widen the margin to 2-0. Herdgen followed that with a two-run double that scored Walsh and Grove to make the score 5-0.

Carthage starting pitcher Katie Herron was on her game. She held down the Green Knights with 10 strikeouts in the opening four innings. Her no-hit bid came to an end in the fourth inning when Ashley Schuettpelz singled.

Kaitlyn Amundson's two-run triple highlighted a St. Norbert three-run seventh inning that cut the Lady Red lead to 4-3. That's all the Green Knights had in the tank as the Lady Reds held onto a 4-3 win.

Walsh went 2-for-2 at the plate for Carthage. Herron scattered one hit, struck out 10 batters and surrendered no walks in 4 1/3 innings of work on the pitching rubber for the Lady Reds.

St. Norbert 10, Lady Reds 4

The Lady Reds found the scoreboard first after Makenzie Walker and Walsh led off the third inning with a double and single respectively. With runners on the corners, Walker came home on a wild pitch to give the Lady Reds a 1-0 lead. Hailey Rothstein followed that with an RBI-double that scored Walsh to make the score 2-0. That RBI was Rothstein's 40th of the season, one shy of Alyssa Schrader's Carthage single-season record of 41 in 2012.

The Green Knights responded with a run in the third inning when Tia Danforth registered an RBI-single that scored Megan Yeo, who walked, to cut the Carthage lead to 2-1.

St. Norbert widened that lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning off RBI-hits from Danforth, Emily Laufer and Amy McBride.

Darian Pelsor and Abby Thompson led off the sixth inning with back-to-back singles. Pelsor and Michuda, Thompson's pinch runner, advanced to second and third on Alessia Knowski's groundout. Pelsor scored on Knowski's fielder's choice to narrow the St. Norbert lead to 5-3. Michuda later scored on a passed ball to get the Lady Reds within one run of the Green Knights at 5-4.

That comeback came to a halt when the Green Knights registered five runs in the sixth inning to secure a 10-4 victory.

Herdegen, Pelsor and Thompson each tallied a pair of hits for Carthage. Pelsor and Walker each logged three innings of work on the pitching rubber for the Lady Reds.

Carthage will know their playoff standing following the doubleheader between North Central College and Augustana College tomorrow, Saturday April 30. The Lady Reds will secure the #4 seed and a spot in the CCIW Tournament if North Central can at least salvage a series-split with Augustana. That doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
