UW-Oshkosh Paid Lady Reds a Visit, Ended in a Split

KENOSHA, WIS.—Three consecutive doubleheaders stood before the Carthage College softball team this week. The Lady Reds opened the week with a 5-2 victory, and a 7-3 loss to North Central College yesterday at the Carthage Softball Field. UW-Oshkosh paid Carthage a visit on Wednesday afternoon at the Carthage Softball Field.

The Titans entered their meeting with the Lady Reds with six votes on the NFCA Division III Coaches' Poll the week of April 20. Another day results in another split for Carthage as they defeated the Titans 6-3 in game one, and failed to rebound in a 7-1 loss in game two.

Carthage sits at 14-14, 5-5 CCIW while UW-Oshkosh owns a 19-5, 8-0 WIAC record.

Lady Reds 6, UW-Oshkosh 3

Makenzie Walker got the nod on the pitching circle for the Lady Reds and tallied a pair of strikeouts en route to a 0-0 game after three innings. UW-Oshkosh registered a pair of runs in the fourth inning when Erika Berry and Lauren Torborg reached base on a hit by pitch, and double to put runners on the corners. This set up Hayden Krueger's two-run double that scored Torborg and Berry to give the Titans a 2-0 lead.

That was enough to fuel the Lady Red fire and Hailey Rothstein made that clear with a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning to tie the game 2-2. Kristine Herdegen, who led off the inning with a single, also scored on the play.

Sam McCloud generated a Carthage two-run fifth inning when she led off with a single. Walker and Herdegen reached base on a fielder's choice and walk to load the bases. A Rothstein walk, followed by a Darian Pelsor sacrifice fly gave the Lady Reds a 4-2 lead.

The Titans responded with a run in the sixth inning to narrow their deficit to 4-3 before the Lady Reds put the exclamation point on the game. Back-to-back RBI-singles from Walker and Herdegen in the sixth inning put the nail in the coffin and secured a 6-3 victory for the Lady Reds.

Jodie Hurd, McCloud, Herdegen and Rothstein each tallied two hits for the Lady Reds. Walker got the pitching win for Carthage. She struck out five and scattered four hits in the complete-game win.

UW-Oshkosh 7, Lady Reds 1

Katie Herron got the pitching start for Carthage and fared well in the opening three innings to keep the score 0-0. The Titans tagged the Lady Reds for a run in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead.

It was a lead the Lady Reds couldn't rebound from as the Titans added four more runs in the fifth inning. A Berry double to left field scored Hoeming, who singled, to give the Titans a 2-0 lead. Torborg followed that with a triple that scored Berry and Haley Beyreuther to make the score 4-0. A Lady Red wild pitch scored Torborg from third to make the score 5-0.

Rothstein drove in Walker, who singled, to narrow the Titan lead to 5-1 in the sixth inning.

That run wouldn't be enough as UW-Oshkosh tallied two runs in the seventh inning to secure a 7-1 victory.

Walker led the Lady Reds with a two-for-four game at the plate. Herron struck out eight batters and scattered five hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Carthage will return to action tomorrow, April 21 at Ripon College. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
