KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage College water polo continued their weekend Collegiate Water Polo Association tournament Saturday at Koenitzer Aquatic Center, where the Lady Reds went 2-1 on the second day with wins over Utica College and Macalester College, before dropping their first match of the season to Washington and Jefferson College.
With the 2-1 record on Saturday, the Lady Reds move to 9-1 on the season and 7-1 in the CWPA.
The Lady Reds started the morning off on fire as they cruised to a 15-4 victory over Utica. Carthage jumped out to an early 6-1 lead after the first period courtesy of a quick hat-trick by
Elyssa Hawkins in the opening eight minute. Hawkins would add another in the third to tied for the team lead in the game with four goals along with teammate
Colleen Koepke. Hawkins showed her versatility on the defensive end also by leading the Lady Reds with four steals in the match. Koepke followed suit with three steals of her own and
Mack Ryan and
Morgan Levy each tallied two goals and two steals.
The Lady Reds hit their first road bump of season in their second match of the day, falling for the first time this season in a 10-3 loss to 2015 CWPA runner-up, Washington and Jefferson. The Lady Reds got goals from
Allie Boothe,
Amanda Boothe and
Carly Strass, however the Presidents were able to keep most of the Lady Reds shots out of the net and shut the Lady Reds out over the final 20 minutes of the match.
Carthge did manage to bounce back however in their final game of the night to defeat Macalester 12-6, giving the Lady Reds their second win of the season over the Scots.
Brittany Wallace had a hat-trick to lead Carthage in the game and was joined by Am. Boothe, Strass, Koepke and
Jane Eckles each with two goals to double-up Macalester on the score board. Additionally, Strass and Eckles each had two assists in the match, while Strass and Am. Boothe had two steals apiece to halt the Scots attack.
Carthage will wrap-up the weekend action on Sunday as they play their final home match of the season at Koenitzer against Connecticut College, starting at 2:00 PM.
