Lady Reds Go To 5-0 In CWPA With A Pair Of Wins Friday

KENOSHA, Wis. – While the Lady Reds rolled to a 6-0 start on the season with a smooth 18-7 win over Penn State-Behrend, it was the win that sent the Carthage College water polo programs to 7-0 on the season which was the best test of the Lady Reds' season to date, edging Grove City College, 12-11 in double overtime Friday at Carthage's Koenitzer Aquatic Center.

The Lady Reds, currently undefeated against their collegiate competition in seven matches this season moved to 5-0 against the College Water Polo Association after going 2-0 Friday.

Allie Booth and Amanda Booth paved the way for the Lady Reds in their opening win of the day combining for nearly half of the Lady Reds' goals, scoring four apiece, in the 18-7 win over Penn State-Behrend.  The sister duo shot a combined 8-of-11 in the match with Amanda shooting 66-percent on 4-of-6 and Allie shooting 80-percent on 4-of-5.  Defensively Anna Shirer shutdown the Lions, recording 10 saves in goal for the Lady Reds, while Jane Eckles, Laura Larson and Carly Strass had three steals each.

In the closest match of day one between any teams, Carthage edged Grove City College, 12-11, in double overtime.   It looked as though Carthage was once again going to run away with a win when Allie Boothe gave the Lady Reds a three-goal lead when as she scored with less than a second remaining in the third quarter to put Carthage up 9-6.  However, the Wolverine came storming back and took a lead at 10-9 with 1:32 left.  With 21-seconds remaining in the game scored her third goal of the game with a shot that she floated to the back post to force overtime.

In overtime period number one, Grove City and Carthage exchanged early goals and then held each other scoreless the remaining time to send the match to the second overtime period still tied.  In the second extra frame, Wallace follow-up a blocked Eckles shot 1:11 into 2OT to give the Lady Reds a one-goal lead with 1:49 remaining.  After both Boothe's cracked shots off the goal frame that could have put the game away with a minute to play, GCC found themselves down just one with the ball and a chance to force a shootout.  Yet with one second remaining the Wolverine's final shot clanked off the near-post and gave the Lady Reds a 12-11 win.

Allie Booth finished with five goals in the match to give her a team-high eleven on the day, while Wallace added four, including the game-winner in double overtime.  Shirer had eight more saves in the second match and Wallace led the team with three steals followed by Strass and Larsen with two each.

Carthage returns to Koenitzer Saturday for three matches as the Lady Reds will face Utica College at 12:45 PM, Washington and Jefferson at 4:30 PM, and Macalester College at 7:00 PM.  The day's competition begins at 9:00 AM as Connecticut College takes on Penn State-Behrend.
