CCIW Semifinal Box ScoreCCIW Consolation Box ScoreThe Carthage College men's tennis team (18-9, 5-1 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost to Augustana College (Ill., 17-11), 5-4, on Saturday, May 3 in the third-place match of the CCIW Men's Tennis Championship at Berens Park in Elmhurst, Ill.
Elmhurst College (16-4) won the championship with a 5-4 decision over Wheaton College (Ill., 18-6). The championship got underway on Tuesday, April 29 with first-round matches on campus sites. The Red Men (17-8), seeded second, shut out seventh-seeded Millikin University (3-10, 0-6 CCIW), 9-0, at the Eastside Tennis & Fitness Club in Kenosha, Wis.
In the other first-round contests on April 29, third-seeded Wheaton (Ill., 17-5) blanked sixth-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University (5-11, 1-5 CCIW), 5-0, at the Centre Court Athletic Club in Hanover Park, Ill., while fourth-seeded Augustana (Ill., 16-10, 3-3) shut out fifth-seeded North Central College (8-10, 2-4), 5-0, at the Quad City Tennis Club in Moline, Ill. In the Friday, May 2 semifinals, Carthage (17-9) lost to Wheaton (Ill., 18-5), 5-1, at the Wheaton Sports Center in Wheaton, Ill., while Elmhurst (15-4) defeated Augustana (16-11), 5-2, at Elmhurst College's Lester Brune Tennis Courts.
In the loss to Augustana in the consolation match, Carthage's
Alex Boomgarden (So., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 20-14) lost to the Vikings' Lawrence Palmer at No. 1 singles, the latter winning, 6-1, 6-1.
Ryan Jump (So., Mundelein, Ill., 21-10) defeated Augustana's Andy Wall at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-7(3), 10-7.
Pawel Jaworski (Fr., Deerfield, Ill., 21-10) was a winner at No. 3 singles, as was
Chris Conley (So., Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield Academy, 20-11) at No. 4 singles and
Tony O'Connell (So., Roswell, N.M./Natabua, 23-8) at No. 5 singles.
Alex Ferruzzi (So., Kenosha, Wis./Salem-Westosha Central, 17-12) lost at No. 6 singles.
Carthage's No. 1 doubles team of
Pawel Jaworski and
Chris Conley (10-8) lost to Lawrence Palmer and Andy Wall, 8-6. The Red Men's No. 2 team of
Alex Boomgarden and
Ryan Jump (12-5) lost to the Vikings, as did the No. 3 tandem of
Tony O'Connell and Alex Feruzzi (6-7).
