Championship VideoThe Carthage College women's water polo team (10-5, 8-4 Collegiate Water Polo Association) won the third-place match of the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Division III Tournament on Sunday, April 13, 8-7, over Macalester College (9-13) at Macalester's Riley Pool/Leonard Natatorium in St. Paul, Minn. Carthage's 2010 team also finished third at the national tournament.
Carthage went 1-1 in pool play on Saturday, April 12. Carthage defeated Utica College (4-12), 8-6, before losing to Washington & Jefferson College (17-7) by a 10-5 margin.
The third-place game against Macalester lasted a CWPA-record one hour and 45 minutes and covered two overtimes and four sudden-death periods. Carthage's
Amanda Kuchan (Sr., Orland Park, Ill./Tinley Park-Andrew) scored two goals, including the game-winner in the fourth sudden-death period.
Brittany Wallace (So., Niles, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy), who was named CWPA all-conference, also scored two goals, as did
Jackie Knightly (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley).
Ember McCoy (Sr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and
Carly Strass (Fr., Western Springs, Ill./La Grange-Lyons Township) had one goal each.
Megan Gillis (Jr., Jenison, Mich.) collected three assists, and goalkeeper
Ashley McGhee (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) had 16 saves. Knightly was named first-team all-tournament and Kuchan second-team all-tournament. Carthage coach
Andy Bax was named the "coach of the tournament."
