The Carthage College men's tennis team (3-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) won both ends of a Saturday, Feb. 8 double-dual match at the Hitters Sportsplex in Middleton, Wis. The Red Men defeated Wisconsin-La Crosse (3-1), 6-3, before knocking off Edgewood College (0-6) by an 8-1 margin.
On Friday, Feb. 7, Carthage lost to Gustavus Adolphus College, 9-0, at the Pleasant Valley Tennis & Fitness Club in Jackson, Wis. The Gusties were ranked 18th in the Oct. 31 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national poll and fourth in the Central Region, while the Red Men were ranked 19th regionally.
On Feb. 8, Carthage's
Alex Boomgarden (So., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 6-5) lost to Wisconsin-La Crosse's Tony Mirasola at No. 1 singles, Mirasola winning, 6-4, 7-5, before defeating Edgewood's Austin Papenthien. 7-5, 6-4.
Ryan Jump (So., Mundelein, Ill., 8-2) defeated UW-La Crosse's Peter Stadum at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and won over Edgewood's Patrick Lagman, 6-2, 7-5.
Pawel Jaworski (Fr., Deerfield, Ill., 6-3) was a winner over Wisconsin-La Crosse at No. 3 singles.
Chris Conley (So., Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield Academy, 3-5) was a winner at No. 4 singles versus Wisconsin-La Crosse but lost at No. 3 singles to Edgewood.
Tony O'Connell (So., Roswell, N.M./Natabua, 6-3) was a winner at No. 5 singles over Wisconsin-La Crosse and at No. 4 versus Edgewood.
Alex Ferruzzi (So., Kenosha, Wis./Salem-Westosha Central, 4-3) lost to Wisconsin-La Crosse at No. 6 singles but was a winner or Edgewood at No. 5 singles, and
Conor Moon (Jr., Sussex, Wis./Woodstock (Ill.)-Marian Central Catholic, 2-2) won a No. 6 singles contest against Edgewood.
Carthage's No. 1 doubles team of
Alex Boomgarden and
Pawel Jaworski (2-2) lost to UW-La Crosse's Tony Mirasola/Peter Stadum, the latter team winning, 9-8(1), but the Red men duo defeated Edgewood's Austin Papenthien/Patrick Lagman by a 9-7 margin. Carthage's No. 2 team of
Ryan Jump and
Chris Conley (4-2) won both of their matches, as did the No. 3 tandem of
Tony O'Connell and
Conor Moon (Jr., Sussex, Wis./Woodstock (Ill.)-Marian Central Catholic, 3-1).
Carthage travels to Elsah, Ill., on Saturday, Feb. 15 to play a double-dual match Principia College's Hexberg Tennis Center. The Red Men play Principia at 9 a.m. and Monmouth College at 1 p.m.
