The Carthage College men's tennis team (1-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost to Gustavus Adolphus College, 9-0, on Friday night, Feb. 7 at the Pleasant Valley Tennis & Fitness Club in Jackson, Wis. The Gusties were ranked 18th in the Oct. 31 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national poll and fourth in the Central Region, while the Red Men were ranked 19th regionally.
Carthage's
Alex Boomgarden (So., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 5-4) lost to Gustavus Adolphus' Mya Smith-Dennis at No. 1 singles, Smith-Dennis winning, 7-5, 3-6, 11-9. Smith-Dennis is ranked 23rd nationally.
Ryan Jump (So., Mundelein, Ill., 6-2) fell to the Gusties' Grant Leisner at No. 2 singles, Leisner winning, 7-5, 7-5.
Pawel Jaworski (Fr., Deerfield, Ill., 4-3) lost at No. 3 singles, as did
Chris Conley (So., Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield Academy, 2-4) at No. 4 singles,
Tony O'Connell (So., Roswell, N.M./Natabua, 5-3) at No. 5 singles and
Alex Ferruzzi (So., Kenosha, Wis./Salem-Westosha Central, 3-2) at No. 6 singles.
Gustavus Adolphus' No. 1 doubles team of Smith-Dennis/Motasem Al-Houni, ranked 17th nationally, defeated Carthage's
Alex Boomgarden and
Pawel Jaworski (1-1), 9-8(2). Carthage's No. 2 team of
Ryan Jump and
Chris Conley (2-2) lost to the Gusties, as did the No. 3 tandem of
Tony O'Connell and
Conor Moon (Jr., Sussex, Wis./Woodstock (Ill.)-Marian Central Catholic, 1-1).
On Saturday, Feb. 8, the Red Men travel Middleton, Wis., to play a double-dual match at the Hitters Sportsplex. Carthage plays Wisconsin-La Crosse at 4 p.m. and Edgewood College at 7 p.m.
