The Carthage College men's tennis team (13-10, 2-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) concluded its 2012-13 season on Saturday, May 4 with a 5-4 win over Augustana College (Ill., 19-11) in the third-place match of the CCIW Men's Tennis Championship at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.
Carthage lost to top-seeded Elmhurst College (13-9), 5-0, on Friday, May 3 in the tournaments semifinals. The Red Men, seeded fourth in the championship, blanked fifth-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University (6-12), 5-0, in a first-round match on Friday. In the other first-round contest, third-seeded Augustana College (Ill., 19-9) shut out sixth-seeded North Central College (3-15), 5-0, and in the other semifinal match, second-seeded Wheaton College (Ill., 13-6) edged Augustana (Ill., 19-10) by a 5-4 margin. In Friday's final match, Illinois Wesleyan (7-12) blanked North Central (Ill., 3-16), 9-0, in the fifth-place match. Elmhurst plays Wheaton (Ill.) in the Saturday, May 4 title match.
In the win over Augustana Carthage's
Jeff Lotz Jr. (Sr., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 19-12) won his No. 1 singles match over the Vikings' Lawrence Palmer, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. With the win, Lotz tied
Matt Whiteside's Carthage career record with 90 singles wins. Whiteside set that mark between 2009 and 2012.
Alex Boomgarden (Fr., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 23-8) defeated Harald Olsson at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Ryan Jump (Fr., Mundelein, Ill., 22-7) was a winner at No. 3 singles.
Brian Howes (Sr., Bartlett, Ill., 20-11) lost at No. 4 singles.
Tom Klassman (Sr., Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove, 13-14) won at No. 5 single, and
Alex Ferruzzi (Fr., Kenosha, Wis./Salem-Westosha Central, 2-2) lost at No. 6 singles.
Carthage's No. 1 doubles team of Lotz and Boomgarden (20-11) was a winner over the Vikings' Palmer and Andy Wall, 8-4. The No. 2 doubles team of
Brandon Curtis (Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and
Conor Moon (So., Sussex, Wis./Woodstock (Ill.)-Marian Central Catholic, 9-16) lost their match, as did the No. 3 tandem of Jump and Howes (13-12).
