The Carthage College women's water polo team (5-10, 4-8 Collegiate Water Polo Association) ended its 2013 season on Saturday, April 13 with a 6-5 loss to Washington & Jefferson College (11-16) in the third-place match at the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Division III Tournament at Connecticut College's Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium in New London, Conn.
Carthage split a pair of pool-play matches on Friday, April 12, defeating Macalester College (6-15), 6-3, before losing to No. 10 Grove City College (12-8) by a 7-5 margin. In the other April 12 pool-play matches, No. 8 Connecticut College (13-6) defeated Penn State-Behrend (0-17), 18-4; Washington & Jefferson College (10-15) defeated Utica College (4-12), 14-4; Connecticut (14-6) won over Washington & Jefferson (10-16), 8-7; Macalester (7-15) defeated Penn State-Behrend (0-18), 13-4; and Utica (5-12) won over Penn State-Behrend (0-19) by a 6-3 margin. Macalester (8-15) defeated Utica (5-13), 8-6, in the fifth-place match, with No. 8 Connecticut (16-6) defeating No. 10 Grove City (13-9), 6-3, in the title match on Saturday, April 13.
In the win over Macalester, on April 5, Carthage collected single goals from
Sammi Craig (So., Chicago Ridge, Ill./Oak Lawn-Richards),
Jordan Crocker (So., Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove), Colleen Koepke (Fr., Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), Erin McCook (Fr., Long Grove, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson) and
Ember McCoy (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley). Ashley McGee (So., Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) collected seven saves.
Hannah Duke (Jr., Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates-Conant) scored two of Carthage's five goals in the loss to Grove City, while McGhee had 10 saves. In the loss to Washington & Jefferson in the third-place contest,
Hannah Duke scored twice, while Lisa Michalowski (Fr., Vernon Hills, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson) collected nine saves and two steals.
The seven-team championship marks the fourth CWPA Division III Tournament. Utica College (2010), Macalester (2011) and Grove City College (2012) previously hosted the championship, with Grove City capturing all three titles.
Unlike previous years, the winner of this year's tournament advances to the CWPA Division I Eastern Championship on Friday-Sunday, April 26-28 at the University of Michigan's Don Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich. The winner of the Division I Eastern Championship moves on to the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship on Friday-Sunday, May 10-12 Harvard University's Blodgett Pool in Cambridge, Mass. The other 12 teams in the Division I Eastern Championship will be Brown University, Princeton University, George Washington University, Bucknell University, Harvard University, Salem International University, Notre Dame College (Ohio), Gannon University, Hartwick College, Indiana University, Mercyhurst College and Michigan.
Carthage's
Tya Crosse (So., Corona, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) and
Hannah Duke (Jr., Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates-Conant) were named second team All-CWPA Division III Conference.
