Box Score The Carthage College men's volleyball team (0-1, 0-0 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked second in the 2013 pre-season American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, opened its 2013 season on Wednesday, Jan. 16 with a 3-0 loss to NCAA Division I Loyola University (Ill., 2-3) at the Joseph J. Gentile Arena in Chicago. The Ramblers were ranked 17th in the Jan. 15 AVCA NCAA Division I/II poll. Loyola's winning set scores over Carthage were 25-15, 25-14 and 25-22.
Joseph Smalzer led the Ramblers with 14 kills and a .417 attack percentage, with Dainis Berzins and Thomas Jaeschke adding seven kills each.
Pat Barry (Jr., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) led the Red Men with 12 kills, and setter
Connor Wexter (Jr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 7.67 assists per set.
Carthage plays host to Quincy University (3-2) on Sunday, Jan. 20 in a 3 p.m. match at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
