The Carthage College women's water polo team (4-6) went 3-2 at the Friday-Saturday, March 30-31 Collegiate Water Polo Association's "East at West Tournament" at Wheaton College's Chrouser Natatorium in Wheaton, Ill.
On Friday, March 30, Carthage defeated Wheaton (Ill., 4-5), 12-8, before losing to Connecticut College (2-4), by an 8-7 margin. On Saturday, March 31, the Lady Reds defeated Penn State-Behrend (0-9), 16-7; won over Utica College (2-8), 8-5; and lost to Macalester College (7-11), 12-9.
In Friday's win over Wheaton (Ill.), the Lady Reds took a 6-3 lead at halftime and out-scored the Thunder, 9-2, in the second half.
Mari Paraskevopoulos (Sr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) had three goals, three assists and four steals.
Jackie Knightly (Fr., Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) had three goals and two steals,
Tya Crosse (Fr., Corona, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) two goals and two steals,
Amanda Kuchan (So., Orland Park, Ill./Tinley Park-Andrew) a goal with two assists and two steals, and
Kati Pedersen (Sr., Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) collected four steals. Goalkeeper
Ashley McGhee (Fr., Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) had 14 saves on 22 shots.
In Friday's loss to Connecticut College, Kuchan had two goals and two assists and Pedersen two goals and one assist. Paraskevopoulos and
Agnes Wojtas (Jr., Palatine, Ill.) had a goal and an assist apiece, with Wojtas collecting three steals. In the Saturday Penn State-Behrend game,
Hannah Duke (So., Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates-Conant) paced Carthage with four goals and two assists. Paraskevopoulos scored six goals with four steals in the win over Utica on Saturday. Wojtas was credited with three goals and an assist against Macalester, while Knightly had two goals and two assists.
In other tournament games on Friday, March 30, Macalester College (4-10) defeated Penn State-Behrend (0-7), 15-2; Wheaton (Ill., 5-5) defeated Utica (1-5), 16-5; Utica (2-5) won over Penn State-Behrend (0-8), 12-7; and Macalester (5-10) defeated Connecticut College (2-5), 14-11. In Saturday, March 31 non-carthage games, Wheaton (Ill., 6-5) defeated Connecticut College (2-6), 6-5; Macalester (6-10) won over Utica (2-6), 14-8; Connecticut (3-6) defeated Utica (2-7), 27-10; Wheaton (Ill., 7-5) defeated Macalester (6-11), 11-7; Connecticut College (4-6) won over Penn State-Behrend (0-10), 16-4; and Wheaton (Ill., 8-5) defeated Penn State-Behrend (0-11) by a 14-3 margin.
