The Carthage College women's water polo team (12-3), ranked eighth in the April 27 Collegiate Water Polo Association's NCAA Division III poll, concluded its 2011 season on Saturday, April 30 by defeating Connecticut College (7-12), 14-9, for fifth place at the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Division III Conference Tournament at Macalester's Riley Pool in St. Paul, Minn.
Carthage opened tournament play with an 11-10 loss to Macalester College (4-16) on Friday, April 29 in a second-round pool-play match. The top-seeded Lady Reds, who received a bye in the first round, defeated Chatham University (9-12), 10-6, in a second-round game on April 29.
In other pool-play action on Friday, ninth-seeded Macalester defeated eighth-seeded Penn State University-Behrend (1-17), 9-3; second-seeded and No. 10 Grove City College (15-12) upended seventh-seeded Utica College (4-12), 16-3; third-seeded Wheaton College (Ill., 9-11) edged sixth-seeded Connecticut (6-11), 7-6; and fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson College (10-6) defeated fifth-seeded Chatham University (8-11), 9-6. In second-round pool play, also on Friday, Connecticut (7-11) defeated Utica (4-13), 12-7. Grove City (16-12) defeated Wheaton (Ill., 9-12), 7-1; Chatham (9-11) defeated Penn State-Behrend (1-18), 11-9; Washington & Jefferson (11-6) defeated Macalester (4-17), 6-3; and Carthage (11-3) won over Chatham (9-12), 10-6, in Friday's final match.
Pool play continued on Saturday morning, April 30 with Utica (5-12) defeating Penn State-Behrend (1-19), 9-5. Carthage (12-3) defeated Connecticut (7-12), 14-9, for fifth place on April 30, followed by Wheaton (Ill., 10-12) winning over Macalester (4-18), 8-1, for third place; Chatham (10-12) defeating Utica (5-13), 13-11, for seventh place.; and Grove City (17-12) winning the title match, 7-2, over Washington & Jefferson (11-7).
