The Carthage College women's water polo team (14-7, 9-1 Collegiate Water Polo Association Eastern Division), ranked eighth in the April 21 Collegiate Water Polo Association's NCAA Division III coaches poll, lost to Grove City College (16-10), 8-7, on Saturday, April 24 in the title match of the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Division III Eastern Championship at Utica College's Harold T. Clark Athletic Center in Utica, N.Y.
Carthage won a pair of pool-play matches on Friday, April 23. The Lady Reds defeated Penn State-Behrend (4-22), 14-2, before winning over Wheaton College (Ill., 12-12) by a 12-8 margin The Wolverines reached the title game by defeating Chatham University, 16-6, and Washington & Jefferson College, 8-6, in pool play.
The second-seeded Lady Reds led the top-seeded Wolverines, 6-5, at halftime, but Grove City scored twice in the fourth period for the win. Grove City was led by Lauren Baur with a game-high three goals. Patti Blatter (Sr., Prospect Heights, Ill./Wheeling), Mari Paraskevopoulos (So., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) and Jessica Shopiro (Sr., Buffalo Grove, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson) each had two goals for the Lady Reds. Kimmy Genian (Jr., Gurnee, Ill./Highland Park) was named to the all-tournament team.
Carthage's Kimmy Genian (Jr., Gurnee, Ill./Highland Park) was named first-team Collegiate Water Polo Division III all-conference, and with Patti Blatter (Sr., Prospect Heights, Ill./Wheeling) and Liza Dickinson (Sr., Mundelein, Ill.) earning second-team all-conference honors.
