The Carthage College men's tennis team (9-6, 2-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to No. 17 the University of Chicago (12-5), 7-2, on Sunday, April 11 at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill. Carthage defeated Lake Forest (13-5), 7-2, in a second match on Sunday afternoon.
In the loss to the Maroons, Carthage's Sammy Ramoni (Sr., Honiara, Solomon Islands, 17-5) lost to Chicago's Will Zhang, Zhang winning , 6-3, 6-1, at number-one singles. Jack Schiro (Sr., Shorewood, Wis., 10-3) won over Jan Stefanski, 6-3, 6-1, at number-two singles. Jeffery Lotz Jr. (Fr., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 13-8) lost at number-three singles. Matt Whiteside (So., Sacramento, Calif., Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 12-5) was a winner at number-four singles. J.T. Delk (Sr., Wheaton, Ill./North, 9-8) lost at number-five singles, as did Alex McLean (So., Belleville, Ill./West, 8-7) at number-six singles.
Carthage's number-one doubles team of Ramoni and Lotz (10-5) lost to Chicago, as did the Red Men's number-two team of Schiro and Schwenke (4-4) and their number-three tandem of Whiteside and Delk (7-5).
In the win over the Foresters, Sammy Ramoni (Sr., Honiara, Solomon Islands, 18-5) defeated Jon Flaksman, 6-2, 6-2, at number-one singles. Jeffery Lotz Jr. (Fr., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 13-9) lost at number-two singles. Matt Whiteside (So., Sacramento, Calif., Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 13-5) was a winner at number-three singles, as was J.T. Delk (Sr., Wheaton, Ill./North, 10-8) at number-four singles, Chris Vargo (Fr., Elmhurst, Ill./York, 5-4) at number-five singles and Alex McLean (So., Belleville, Ill./West, 9-7) at number-six singles. Carthage's number-one doubles team of Ramoni and Lotz (11-5) was a winner over Lake Forest. The Red Men's number-two team of Schiro and Schwenke (4-5) lost to the Foresters, but Carthage's number-three team of Delk and Vargo (1-0) was a winner. Carthage travels to Naperville, Ill., on Tuesday, April 13 to play CCIW-opponent North Central College (2-10, 0-1 CCIW) in a 3:30 p.m. match.
