The Carthage College men's swimming team opened its 2009-10 season on Saturday, Oct. 31 with a 133-129 win over Hope College at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. Nathan Ripley (Sr., Middleton, Wis.) won three events, taking first place in the 50 freestyle (21.87), the 100 freestyle (46.82) and the 200 freestyle (1:46.01).
Kyle Drake (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) won both the 200 backstroke (1:54.22) and the 1,000 freestyle (9:54.60), while finishing second in the 200 individual medley (1:59.20). Doug Schranck (So., Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) finished first in both the 100 butterfly (52.49) and the 200 butterfly (1:57.76).
Eric Ross (So., West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) finished second in both the 500 freestyle (4:55.15) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:04.98). Chris Varner (Jr., Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) was second in the 100 backstroke (55.21). Jon Bond (Fr., Dixon, Ill.) was third in the 100 backstroke (55.83), as was Alex Van Huis (Sr., Winneconne, Wis.) in the 200 butterfly (2:04.83), Ryan Ortmann (So., Woodstock, Ill.) in the 50 freestyle (22.50) and Adam Van Huis (So., Winneconne, Wis.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.70). Carthage travels to Lake Forest, Ill., on Friday, Nov. 6 to take on Lake Forest College in a 6 p.m. dual meet at the Sports Center.
