NECC Week Five Recap – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (3-1) vs. Indiana State University Sycamores (2-2) [Division III – Midwest B]

Score: Indiana State 2, Carthage 0

On Tuesday, Oct 21, Carthage Smash welcomed the Indiana State University Sycamores into the virtual fighting arena. The Firebirds were fresh off a 2-0 win against Roosevelt University in Week Four. However, the team hit a roadblock this week while competing against Indiana State player EzBreezy (Daisy). Although Carthage kept Set scores close, EzBreezy became the difference maker. He contributed to the Sycamore's 2-0 win over Carthage. As a result, Carthage dropped to 3-2, 6-7, and is in fifth place in their Division III – Midwest B stage.

Carthage's Smash Bros roster consists of senior captain Connor Grubisic (Spacefood), junior Alex Chuluunbat (ParaMedix), sophomore Shannon Pasters (MintMelee), and sophomore RyleePreston (Ender14).

Smash Bros Crew Battle Explanation: Crew Battles are a team-based competition where two teams of players face off in a series of one-on-one matches. The losing player swaps with another teammate, and the winning player remains in the game, potentially facing a new opponent from the opposing team. The battle continues until one entire team runs out of stocks. Each team has four players, each carrying three stocks, for a total of 12. For a best-of-three series, the process repeats for each set played.

Set One: Pasters (Banjo) started for Carthage against Indiana State's Glacewind (Pokémon Trainer). Pasters took one stock from Glacewind before being eliminated. Glacewind performed nice maneuvers such as up-airs and forward tilts to ring in knockouts. Indiana State led 11-9. Chuluunbat (Bowser) would enter the fray to claim Glacewind's final two stocks, evening the count 9-9. Chuluunbat performed a timely shield break with Bowser's down-b that took a stock. Then, he finished off Glacewind with a side-b on a platform within the Hollow Bastion stage. Chuluunbat then fought against TheStankMaster (Luigi). Both fighters showcased great combos with their respective characters. However, Chuluunbat took advantage of Bowser's ability to tank hits and played the percentage game well enough to finish TheStankMaster off with his coveted up-tilt move. Carthage took a 7-6 lead.

Set One (Continued): In the next fight, Chuluunbat, on a single stock, claimed all three stocks from Unque (King K Rool). Once again, Chuluunbat played around his strengths – take hits and find openings to strike with Bowser's high damage output. He claimed Unque's three stocks and finished it with an epic ground pound off the left ledge in Small Battlefield – Carthage extended its lead 7-3. Chuluunbat then faced EzBreezy (Daisy). EzBreezy made quick work of Chuluunbat, taking his final stock with a back throw on the right ledge in Small Battlefield.

Indiana State cut its deficit 6-3. EzBreezy then competed against Grubisic (Ness) in a fight where he lost one stock to Grubisic. EzBreezy managed to claim all of Grubisic's stock by throwing turnips off the stage to prevent Grubisic from utilizing Ness' PK Thunder recovery. Indiana State gained a 3-2 lead. Set One ended with Preston (ZSS) and EzBreezy battling hard. The difference was EzBreezy's ability to stay patient while Preston persisted in trying to land a stun combo. Unfortunately, Preston came up short.

Set Two: After a heartbreaking Set One loss, Grubisic (Samus) competed against Ginku (Byleth) and claimed all three stocks, while giving up one of his own. Grubisic did a nice job of ledge-trapping Ginku and finished things off with a charge shot on the Town & City stage – Carthage led 11-9. Grubisic then faced TheStankMaster (Luigi), where he self-destructed to begin, but battled his way on one stock to eliminate his opponent. Grubisic showcased his perseverance and ended his performance with a back throw into a mini-charge shot – Carthage extended its lead 10-6.

Set Two (Continued): EzBreezy (Daisy) entered the fray and would subsequently eliminate Grubisic and Pasters (Banjo) to claim four stocks combined. Indiana State cut the deficit 6-5. Once again, EzBreezy took down Preston (ZSS) after mixing up his moveset that still revolved around plucking and chucking turnips as Daisy. Preston also suffered a self-destruct after failing to grab the right ledge in Hollow Bastion.

EzBreezy three-stocked Preston and ended the fight with a parasol strike – Indiana State took a 5-3 lead. Chuluunbat (Bowser) and EzBreezy fought in a match that went down to the very last stock for both of them. Chuluunbat used Bowser's side-b to give Carthage one chance down 3-1. Chuluunbat encountered Glacewind (Pokémon Trainer). At first, Chuluunbat had a reasonable opportunity after taking a quick stock. However, Glacewind racked up damage and finished Chuluunbat off with a Charizard down throw. This gave Indiana State a 2-0 series win.

Player Comments [Alex Chuluunbat]: "I felt like we could have definitely won. I think that something we'll have to work on moving forward is nerves in high-stress scenarios. Playing under stress is a valuable skill in esports. The better you can manage nerves, the better you will perform in the long run."

NECC Week Five Recap – Rainbow Six Siege (3-2) vs. Grand Valley State University [GVSU] Club White (2-3) [Division IV - West Central B]

Score: Carthage 2, GVSU 0

On Wednesday, Oct. 22, Carthage R6, including sophomore captain Samuel Bergamo (Scorp), sophomore Chris Vallee (Typhoon), sophomore Major Andrews (AirMajor), junior Rey Trejo (Paltry), and junior Jalyn Green (Astro), competed against Grand Valley State University Club White in a streamed best-of-three match. It was Carthage R6's first streamed match since their 2-0 loss against Arkansas State University Black on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Rainbow Six Siege Explanation: Rainbow Six Siege is a five-versus-five tactical shooter where teams alternate between attacking and defending bomb sites. Rounds can be won either by planting/defusing the bomb or eliminating the opposing team. Success relies heavily on precise gunplay, environmental destruction, and coordinated teamwork.

Map One (Chalet / 7-1 Win): Entering this match, Carthage R6 looked to start hot after giving up 11 straight rounds across two maps vs. Arkansas State in Week Three. On Chalet, the Firebirds were nearly flawless against GVSU Club White on attack, going 5-1 before the role-swapping half. Carthage's poised attacking rounds were jump-started by double kills from Trejo and Vallee on the second-floor library stairs and piano room, respectively, in Round One. Vallee took a step forward in his ability to play off far angles around the map while guarding bomb sites. Carthage R6 looked great. The team communicated efficiently, played alongside one another, held great angles, countered GVSU on defense, and picked GVSU apart on attack with exceptional roam clearing. It was a complete 180 from what occurred against Arkansas State two weeks ago.

Map One Highlight: In Round Two, the Firebirds defended the first-floor Bar and Games bomb site. Bergamo was taken out, and Trejo pulled the man count to four-versus-four. Vallee, playing in second-floor Library, would spray through the open floorboards to eliminate GVSU attacker Vinny before being baited out by Coost on the East Window. Green found Cady sneaking into Games and took him out to make it a three-versus-two in favor of Carthage. The last 10 seconds included Doz picking Trejo off from Central Stairs, Andrews swinging to secure a refrag, and Green cooking Coost with fire to secure the round win.

Map Two (Border / 7-3 Win): After a dominant Map One, Carthage R6 looked to make a statement on Border. Heading into this, the Firebirds were 0-2 on Border. With an extra week of preparation, Carthage R6 wanted to show its growth against GVSU Club White. In Round One, Andrews planted in the second-floor Archives in a four-versus-one scenario. GVSU player Doz took out Green and attempted to stop Andrews' plant. However, Trejo would swing from the 90 hallway and secured the win. Round Two saw Andrews barrel his way through Archives to take out GVSU's last line of defense, knocking him back with a shield and finishing them off for a 2-0 lead.

Map Two (Border / 7-3 Win – Continued): Then, Carthage would hit a roadblock and lose the next two rounds. In Round Three, Green was flushed out from East Balcony while guarding a plant. In Round Four, Bergamo was in a one-versus-two situation and tried to eliminate the last GVSU defender but could not locate him in the first-floor bathroom. In Round Five, Carthage fell 3-2 in Map Two after GVSU secured second-floor Armory/Lockers from attackers looking to enter top-down and reach the first-floor Ventilation and Workshop bomb site. As a result, Andrews was left in a one-versus-two scenario where he had no choice but to plant and get simultaneously eliminated by GVSU. From here, Carthage would take the next five rounds to secure a 7-3 Border win and a 2-0 series win.

Map Two Highlight: One highlight from this hot streak was in Round Eight, where Carthage found themselves in a 3-5 post plant situation. GVSU player Doz planted in the first-floor Tellers bomb site. Andrews clipped two GVSU attackers with a DMR to make it three-versus-three. Bergamo would throw an impact grenade at a soft wall near Tellers and eliminated Doz. It was a two-versus-two scenario as GVSU attacker Coost took out Bergamo. Then, Trejo would swing left in Tellers and eliminate GVSU attacker Cady to make it a two-versus-one. With five seconds on the defuse timer, Trejo provided cover fire on the East Stairs, allowing Andrews to defuse and put Carthage up 5-3 at the time.

Across both maps for Kills-Deaths-Assists, Carthage R6's players finished with the following statistics: Bergamo (23-11-8), Vallee (21-10-9), Trejo (18-9-5), Green (10-9-2), and Andrews (6-9-3). With this victory, Carthage R6 is now fourth in Division IV – West Central B with a 3-2 overall and a 6-4 map record.

NECC Week Five Recap – Rocket League Black (5-0) vs. University of Arkansas Razorbacks (2-3)  [Division IV – Midwest A]

Score: Carthage 4, UARK 0

After a dominant Week Four showing, Carthage RL Black created deja vu with another sweep in Week Five. The team's roster includes junior captain Penn Gilchrist (Pixlr), junior Lucas Menzer (Joyystik), and senior Tanner Lee (Flare). This week, the Firebirds put together a 4-0 victory against the University of Arkansas [UARK] Razorbacks. It was an off-stream, best-of-seven series on Monday, Oct 20, due to a reschedule. Gilchrist scored once, tacked on three assists, and saved the ball twice. Game Two became a defensive battle for half the contest. UARK tightened up on defense. Each team forced at least six shots. However, Menzer broke free for the game's lone goal to secure a victory.

Game Three was a 4-2 win for Carthage RL Black. This time, UARK was outshot 10-6. Once again, the Firebirds gained momentum to obtain a comfortable lead. Lastly, Gilchrist finished with four goals, eight assists, five saves, 10 shots, and five demos.

Player Comments [Tanner Lee]: "Arkansas was the toughest opponent we had so far. They started to panic after we led 2-0 in the series, and that made the rest of the way pretty smooth sailing. Honestly, the biggest challenge of the season has been keeping ourselves motivated to grind when we are finding such a large amount of success in this division. Despite that, I believe we are doing a good job of talking to each other about staying on track with our goal to beat anyone, even outside this league."

NECC Week Four and Five Recap – Overwatch 2 Red (5-0) vs Illinois Institute of Technology [IIT] Scarlet Hawks (2-3) and Saginaw Valley State University [SVSU] (2-2)
[Division IV – Central A]

Score: Carthage 3, IIT 0, and Carthage 3, SVSU 0

Ending our recap, Carthage OW2 Red played in two matches this past week due to fall break. The team roster includes junior captain Mason Stenger (zXc), junior Joy Schultz (JumpyWizard), sophomore Billy Flanagan (ChickenFries), sophomore Deacon Kirvan (FerociousPig), and sophomore Adam Hollis (Hollister). With wins over IIT and SVSU, Carthage OW2 Red remains atop Division IV – Central A with a 5-0 overall and 15-0 map record.

Overwatch 2 Game Explanation: Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play, 5v5, team-based hero shooter where players pick a unique hero with distinct abilities and roles (Tank, Damage, or Support) to complete specific objectives-based game modes (Control, Escort, Hybrid, Push, Flashpoint). The core gameplay involves a team-focused brawl, where cooperation and strategy are essential to win.

First, Carthage OW2 Red defeated Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) by a 3-0 score on Thursday, Oct 23. Map One was a 2-0 win on the Control game mode on Suravasa. The Firebirds remained calm and showcased their tenacity. Next, they took a 3-0 win on the Flashpoint game mode. This proved Carthage's ability to dominate in a game mode that has not been played often in Fall 2025. Lastly, the Firebirds wrapped up SVSU 3-0 on Escort.

On Saturday, Oct 25, the Firebirds defended their undefeated streak by toppling Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Scarlet Hawks by a 3-0 score. Map One was a 2-0 Control victory on Lijang Tower, a map where Carthage OW2 Red is quite comfortable. Flanagan helped secure the first control point with DPS hero Pharah's ultimate ability – barrage, which claimed two IIT players. Stenger then finished off the second capture point by launching a pulse bomb as Tracer.

Next, the Firebirds engaged in a hard-fought Hybrid game on the King's Row map. Each team secured three points on attack – one for unlocking the payload and two additional points for passing checkpoints. In the end, Carthage won 4-3 by pushing the payload 90.26 meters in overtime and preventing IIT from passing that distance.

Lastly, on New Queen Street, Carthage OW2 Red competed in the Push game mode. The Firebirds were ferocious (no pun intended) as the Scarlet Hawks could not get a single meter of distance while guiding the robot. Carthage traveled the whole 128-meter path within seven minutes. This is a testament to the team's versatility on attack and defense in a game mode such as Push.

Player Comments [Billy Flanagan]: "I think everyone played really well, everyone had a lot of kills, and we were generally playing really smoothly. It's not the best of competition, but it's still nice to be undefeated, and we're very excited to keep our streak going. From the looks of it, Overwatch is coming for another undefeated season."
