From Morrison, Ill., Johnny Diehl lettered four times in football (1937-40) and in 1940, briefly held a national record for the longest field goal. He went on to coach basketball and softball at Reynolds High School in Reynolds, Ill. (1941-42), served as athletic director , football coach, basketball coach and track and field coach at Prophetstown High School in Prophetstown, Ill. (1947-53), and as athletic director at Bremen High School in Midlothian, Ill. (1953-77). Diehl was named “National High School Athletic Director of the Year” in 1977 by the National Council of Athletic Directors, as well as “Illinois High School Athletic Director of the Year.” While a head coach at Prophetstown, he won three conference football titles, five basketball championships, and his 1952 hardcourt team set a school record with 21-straight victories. While athletic director of Bremen High School, Diehl helped form the Southwest Inter-Conference Association.
