From Middletown, Wis., Joe McGhee lettered four times in both cross country (1970-73) and track and field (1971-74). He was a four-time All-CCIW honoree in cross country, finishing third at the 1970 CCIW Cross Country Championship, second in 1971 and third in both 1972 and 1973. In 1972, he finished 34th at the NAIA Cross Country Championship and taking third place in the district meet. In 1973, McGhee finished 15th nationally and was named an NAIA All-American. In track and field, he was named All-CCIW in both 1972 and 1973 with first-place finishes in the one-mile run at the CCIW Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
