Jay Flanagan's tenure as Cross Country Head Coach at Carthage from 1972 to 1982 significantly elevated the college's track and cross country programs. Under his guidance, Carthage achieved four NAIA top-10 finishes and secured two top-10 finishes at the NCAA Division III Meet. Additionally, Flanagan's coaching expertise nurtured 17 All-CCIW runners and one NAIA All-America selection. His team's 11th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in 1982 remains one of the program's best accomplishments to date. Flanagan also coached the 1973 team that beat North Central at the CCIW Cross Country Championships.
