From Chicago, Augie Schmidt III lettered three times in football (1958-60), once in basketball (1959) and twice in baseball (1960-61). A year after graduation, he was named head baseball coach, a position he held for the next 19 season before retiring after the 1980 campaign. Schmidt’s 276 baseball wins is surpassed only by his son, Augie Schmidt IV. The elder Schmidt also served as head softball coach for the 1987 season, as well as an assistant football coach from 1961 to 1982, an assistant basketball coach and as the athletic director in the 1980s.
