Carthage College has announced the hiring of Phil Burwell as its new director of athletic communications. Burwell will replace Steve Marovich, sports information director, who will retire after completing his 21st year of service to Carthage.
A native of Solon, Ohio, Burwell received his bachelor's degree from Kent State University in December of 2010. He joins Carthage following three years at the Mid-American Conference as the director of media relations. He most recently was the MAC's primary media contact for men's soccer, women's volleyball, women's basketball, and men's and women's golf.
During Burwell's time at Kent State, he served as an undergraduate assistant to the Golden Flashes sports information department. From 2011 to 2012, he served a one-year term as the MAC's media relations assistant covering soccer, field hockey, track and field, cross country, gymnastics and golf. Burwell returned to the MAC later in 2012 following a stint as Eastern Michigan University's media relations assistant and new media coordinator.
Additionally, Burwell has worked with the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League, and the Cleveland Gladiator of the Arena Football League.
He has also played key roles in the media and championship operations of the 2011 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships, 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship first and second rounds, 2012 NCAA Bowling Championship, 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship first and second rounds, the 2014 NCAA Bowling Championship, and most recently, the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Midwest Regional.Â
