The Carthage College men's tennis team (1-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) edged Monmouth College (1-3), 5-4, on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 16 at the Racine Racquet & Fitness Club in Racine, Wis.
Carthage's
Jeff Lotz Jr. (Sr., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 8-4) defeated Monmouth's Chris Franco, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, but
Alex Boomgarden (Fr., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 8-3) lost to David Johnson at No. 2 singles, Johnson winning, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Ryan Jump (Fr., Mundelein, Ill., 8-1) was a winner at No. 3 singles.
Juan Robles (So., Bogota, Columbia, 1-4) lost at No. 4 singles.
Brian Howes (Sr., Bartlett, Ill., 9-3) was a winner at No. 5 singles, as was
Tom Klassman (Sr., Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove, 3-5) at No 6 singles.
Carthage's No. 1 doubles team of Lotz and Boomgarden (5-5) fell to the Fighting Scots' David Johnson/David Stewart, 9-8(5). The No. 2 doubles team of
Conor Moon (So., Sussex, Wis./Woodstock (Ill.)-Marian Central Catholic) and
Brandon Curtis (Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge, 3-1) also lost. The Red Men's No. 3 tandem of Howes and Jump (3-2) was a winner over Monmouth.
Carthage travels to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday, Feb. 23 to play a double-dual match at Coe College's Clark Racquet Center. The Red Men take on Coe at 9 a.m. and Buena Vista University at 1 p.m.
