Carthage won the seven-team championship to claim its sixth CCIW title and fifth in a row with 920.50 points, followed by Wheaton College (Ill.) second at 886.50 points, Illinois Wesleyan University third at 471.50, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology fourth at 403, Augustana College (Ill.) fifth at 372.50, Millikin University sixth at 154 and North Central College seventh with at 151 points.
Carthage's
Kyle Drake (Sr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) was named the meet's "most valuable swimmer" by winning three events. Drake finished first in the 400 individual medley with a record-breaking time of 4:00.66, which shattered a Carthage record, a CCIW record and a Koenitzer Aquatic Center mark. He also won the 200 backstroke (1:48.94) and the 200 individual medley (1:53.68). Drake set a Carthage record in the 200 IM preliminaries at 1:52.99.
Ryan Ortmann (Sr., Woodstock, Ill.) and
Teryn Solan (Fr., St. John, Ind./Lake Central) won two events each, Ortmann the 50 freestyle (21.05) and the 100 freestyle (46.16) and Solan the 500 freestyle (4:41.45) and the 1,650 freestyle (16:09.84). Ortmann also finished fifth in the 100 butterfly (52.98). Two other Red Men collected wins,
Scott Pinter (So., Bloomington, Ill./Normal-Community) in the 100 breaststroke (57.86) and
Adam Van Huis (Sr., Winneconne, Wis.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.29). Pinter was also second in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.56) and Van Huis fifth in the 400 individual medley (4:13.69). Carthage had one winning relay team, its 400 medley squad of Drake, Pinter
Doug Schranck (Sr., Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) and Ortmann in a time of 3:25.58 which equaled a Carthage record.
Jake Carabelli (Jr., South Beloit, Ill./Rockton-Hononegah) tied for second place in the 200 freestyle (1:44.33) and took third in both the 100 backstroke (53.05) and the 200 backstroke (1:53.68).
Connor McCurrie (So., Wilmette, Ill./Winnetka-New Trier) finished third in both the 500 freestyle (4:44.67) and the 1,650 freestyle (16:41.91).
Doug Schranck was third in the 100 butterfly (51.38) and fourth in the 200 butterfly (1:54.81).
Tyler Smith (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) was fourth in the 100 butterfly (52.69) and fifth in the 200 butterfly (1:59.56).
Greg Alexander (Fr., Barrington, Ill.) was fifth in the 100 breaststroke (59.17), as was
Mitch Reecher (Fr., Byron, Ill.) in the 200 backstroke (1:59.71),
Eric Ross (Sr., West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) in the 500 freestyle (4:46.89) and
Adam Glover (Sr., Eureka, Mo.) in the 1,650 freestyle (16:52.73). Red Men coach Greg Earhart was named the CCIW “Co-Coach of the Year" for the second time.
