Women's Tennis Finishes Third at the CCIW Championship

Haleigh McPeek and Holly Weber Advance to Singles Finals

The Carthage College women's tennis team (4-4, 4-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) finished third at the Friday-Saturday, Oct. 5-6 CCIW Women's Tennis Championship at the Oak Brook Tennis Center in Oak Brook, Ill. 

Wheaton College (Ill.) won its 18th league championship and eighth in a row since 2005-06 with 75 points, followed by Augustana College (Ill.) second at 49, Carthage third at 37, Illinois Wesleyan University fourth at 29, North Central College fifth at 21, Elmhurst College sixth at 14 and Millikin University seventh with no points.
 
Carthage's Bari Reynolds (Jr., Sterling, Ill., 10-8) won her quarterfinals match at No. 1 singles over Illinois Wesleyan's Andrea Kerwin, 7-5, 6-0, before losing to Kim Sawyer of Augustana (Ill.) in the semifinals, Sawyer winning, 6-2, 6-1.  Reynolds then won over North Central's Jenny Velasquez, 8-2. In the playback semifinals before losing to Elmhurst' Annie Duggan in the third-place match, Duggan winning, 9-7.  Haleigh McPeek (So., Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest, 12-4) won over Millikin's Brianna Hogan, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 2 singles quarterfinals; defeated Augustana's Emily Kaczmarek, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals; but lost the title match Wheaton's Kristin Boyer, Boyer winning, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.  Erin Henrickson (So., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale-South, 6-8) ousted Elmhurst' Lauren Kuehn, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 3 singles quarterfinals before losing to Augustana's Krista Panko in the semifinals, Panko winning, 7-5, 6-1.  Henrickson then lost to North Central's Madeline Urban, 8-3, in the playback semifinals. 
 
Abbi Howell (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest, 7-7) lost to Illinois Wesleyan's Alissa Goetz in the No. 4 singles quarterfinals, Goetz winning, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.  Howell then fell to North Central's Reynolds Cross, 8-6, in the playback semifinals.  Kirsten Peterson (Fr., Hastings, Minn., 6-8) defeated Illinois Wesleyan's Svenja Schroeder in the No. 5 singles quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(7-6), before losing to Wheaton's Julia Carey in the semifinals, Carey winning, 6-1, 6-2.  Peterson then defeated Elmhurst' Brittany Kuehn, 8-2, in the playback semifinals before losing a re-match, 8-4, to Illinois Wesleyan's Svenja Schroeder in the third-place contest.  Holly Weber (Jr., Salem, Wis./Westosha Central, 7-3) won over Millikin's Tiara Crusoe in the No. 6 singles quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-0; defeated Augustana's Katie Schnarnagle in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-7(5-7), 6-3; but lost to Wheaton's Julie Buursma in the title match, Buursma winning, 6-1, 6-1.
 
In doubles, Carthage's No.1 team of Reynolds and McPeek (11-3) won their quarterfinals match, 8-1, over Millikin's Cydney Boyd/Kelly Commons; defeated Kim Sawyer/Aileen McDonald, 8-4, in the semifinals; but lost the title match to Wheaton's Sarah Ray/Julie Buursma, 8-4.  The No. 2 team of Hendrickson and Howell (10-7) won their quarterfinals match, 8-0. over Millikin's Ashlee Colby/Brianna Hogan; defeated Miranda Pence/Chelsea Lavin from Augustana, 8-5, in the semifinals; but lost to Wheaton's Kristin Boyer/Marissa Shults, 8-2, in the title match.  The Lady Reds' No. 3 tandem of Peterson and Weber (4-6) fell to North Central's Rebecca Ross/Kassandra Bernardo, 8-5, in a quarterfinals contest; won over Illinois Wesleyan's Lauren Casey/Svenja Schroeder, 8-2, in the playback semifinals; and defeated North Central's Rebecca Ross/Kassandra Bernardo, 9-8(7-2) for third place.
