Results

The Carthage College women's track and field team (38-5-1 outdoor record) won the Saturday, April 30 Wisconsin Private College Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Wisconsin Lutheran College's Raabe Stadium in Milwaukee.

The Lady Reds won the nine-team event, their 14th overall state title, with 210.50 points. Carroll University (Wis.) was second at 143.50, followed by St. Norbert College third at 133, Ripon College fourth at 109.50, Beloit College fifth at 49.50, Edgewood College sixth at 36, the Milwaukee School of Engineering seventh at 38, Wisconsin Lutheran eighth at 29 and Concordia University (Wis.) ninth with five points.

Mindy Harrington (Sr., Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton) won three events, taking first place in the hammer throw (154-9), the shot put (43-1 ¾) and the discus (145-2). Sarah Thompson (Jr., Byron, Ill.) took first place in both the 100-meter high hurdles (15.65) and the high jump (5-1). Christine Nelson (Jr., Rock City, Ill./Dakota) took first place the long jump (17-10 ¾), as did Morgan Wiechmann (Jr., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown) in the 5,000-meter run (19:16.96).

Joslyn Drew (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) was second in the triple jump (34-11 ¾) and third in the long jump (16-5 ¾). Ahvia Greene (Sr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) was second in the hammer throw (146-9), as was Katie Gordon (Jr., Ingleside, Ill./Fox Lake-Grant Community) in the discus (135-2), Cindy Cavanagh in the javelin (96-11). Samantha Nelson (Fr., Oshkosh, Wis./West) in the 100-meter high hurdles (15.85), Teresina Watson (Sr., Racine, Wis./Walden III) in the 400-meter dash (1:01.81), Katie Kummerer (Fr., Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale-Central) in the 800-meter run (2:28.50) and Courtney Conrad (So., Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake-South) in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:12.44). The Lady Reds also picked up a win from their 1,600-meter relay team of Watson, Nelson, Marissa Weiler (Fr., Morton Grove, Ill./Skokie-Niles North) and Patti Laufenberg (Fr., Waunakee, Wis.) with a time of 4:07.73.

Carthage also sent four sprinters to the Drake Relays on Friday-Saturday, April 29-30 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Lady Reds' 400-meter relay team of Ashura Jenkins (Sr., Aurora, Ill/Christian), Molly Chlum (Jr., Tinley Park, Ill./Orland Hills-Andrew), Kelly McHale (Sr., Naperville, Ill./North) and Carnesha Johnson (Fr., Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) finished eighth in the college division with a time of 48.35 but and improved their NCAA-provisional standing with a time of 48.17 in the preliminaries. The same four runners also competed in the 800-meter relay but did not reach the finals. Carthage travels to Rock Island, Ill., on Friday-Saturday, May 6-7 for the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Ericson Stadium beginning at 10 a.m. each day.
