The Carthage College men's tennis team (10-4, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) finished fourth at the Saturday-Sunday, March 26-27 Wabash College “Kerry Seward Memorial Invitational,” conducted this year at both the Collett Tennis Center in Crawfordsville, Ind., and at the DePauw University Tennis Center in Greencastle, Ind.

Coe College won the eight-team event with 59 points, followed by Ohio Northern University second at 55,Wabash third at 52, Carthage fourth at 51, the Coe junior varsity team fifth at 45, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sixth at 26, Transylvania University seventh at 20 and Hanover College eighth with 16 points.

Carthage's Jeff Lotz Jr. (So., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 15-3), ranked 19th in the March 17 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Region rankings, won the No. 1 singles flight by defeating Ohio Northern's Joey Frank, 6-4, 6-2. Daneric Hazelman (Jr., Lautoka, Fiji Islands/Natabua, 15-4), ranked 22nd in the region rankings, lost to the Polar Bears' Michael Kathary, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 2 singles title match. Matt Whiteside (Jr., Sacramento, Calif./Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 13-3) lost to Ohio Northern's Do Thai in the No. 3 singles championship match, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7. Alex McLean (Jr., Belleville, Ill./West, 2-4) finished sixth at No. 4 singles, Nick Boomgarden (Jr., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 10-8) fifth at No. 5 singles and Russell Mull (Jr., Lake Forest, Ill., 2-6) fifth at No. 6 singles.

Carthage's No. 1 doubles team of Hazelman and Lotz (16-3), ranked 11th in the region, won its flight with an 8-6 win over Coe's Elliot Rausa and Scott Stegemann. Carthage's No. 2 team of Whiteside and Boomgarden (13-4) finished fourth, and the No. 3 tandem of Howes and Mull (6-5) took fifth place.

The Red Men travel to Whitewater, Wis., on Saturday, April 2 to play a double-dual match at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Carthage takes on the host-Warhawks at 9:30 a.m. and Lawrence University at 12:30 p.m.
