The Carthage College men's swimming team (3-2 dual meet record) won the Friday-Saturday, Dec. 2-3 Carthage Swimming Classic at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage won the four-team event with 966 points, just eight points ahead of second-place Olivet College at 958. Lewis University was third at 675 and Lake Forest College fourth with 515 points.
Carthage's
Kyle Drake (Sr. Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) won four events, taking first place in the 100 backstroke (52.05), the 200 backstroke (1:49.11), the 200 individual medley (1:54.29) and the 400 individual medley (Carthage-record 4:01.42). Drake's times in the 200 backstroke and the 400 IM currently leads NCAA Division III.
Doug Schranck (Sr. Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) won both the 100 butterfly (51.83) and the 200 butterfly (1:55.71).
Ryan Ortmann (Sr. Woodstock, Ill.) was second in the 50 freestyle (21.68) and third in the 100 butterfly (53.91), and Teryn Solun (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) was second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:19.37). The Red Men also picked up a win from their 400 medley relay team of Drake,
Greg Alexander (Fr., Barrington, Ill.), Schranck and Ortmann with a time of 3:31.87.
Carthage returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 7 versus Lewis University and Northwestern University in 1 p.m. triangular meet at the Lewis Pool in Romeoville, Ill.
