The Carthage College men's swimming team (5-3 dual-meet record), ranked 21st in the Jan. 12 CollegeSwimming.com/College Swimming Coaches Association of America NCAA Division III poll, won the Wisconsin Private College Swimming Championship on Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage won the five-team event with 347 points, easily out-distancing second-place Lawrence University with 120.50 points. Ripon College was third at 77, followed by Carroll University fourth at 56 and Beloit College fifth with 50.50 points. The state title was the eighth in a row for the Red Men and their 10th overall.
Three Red Men won two events each.
Blake Bendix (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) won both the 50 freestyle (22.17) and the 200 butterfly (2:10.15).
Isaac Rothenbaum (Sr., Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) won both the 100 freestyle (48.40) and the 200 individual medley (2:01.94), and
Steven Mathe (So., Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein-Carmel Catholic) finished first in both the 500 freestyle (4:58.04) and the 1,650 freestyle (17:13.84).
Also winning for Carthage were
Mike Moravek (Jr., Rolling Meadows, Ill./Palatine-Fremd) in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.68),
Kyle Drake (Sr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) in the 100 butterfly (57.16),
Bob Pellican (Sr., Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) in the 200 backstroke (1:57.12),
Doug Schranck (Jr., Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.16) and
Adam Van Huis (Jr., Winneconne, Wis.) in the 400 individual medley (4:34.02).
The Red Men also picked up three relay wins: the 200 freestyle relay team of Mathe, Dan Jones (Jr., Brown Deer, Wis.),
Buck Hoover (S., Woodstock, Ill.) and
Eric Primdahl (Fr., Kildeer, Ill./Arlington Heights-St. Viator); the 400 freestyle relay team of
Chris Varner (Sr., Wildwood, Mo./Eureka),
Connor McCurrie (Fr., Wilmette, Ill./Winnetka-New Trier), Rothenbaum and Drake; and the 400 medley relay team of Pellican, Schranck, Bendix and
Ryan Ortmann (Jr., Woodstock, Ill.).
The Red Men are idle until the Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 17-19 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Swimming Championship at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Chrouser Fitness Center in Wheaton, Ill. (10:30 a.m./6 p.m. each day).
