The Carthage College men's cross country team (5-6) opened its 2010 season by finishing eighth at the Saturday, Sept. 18 Concordia University (Wis.) Invitational in Mequon, Wis. Wisconsin-Stevens Point won the 15-team event with 37 points, followed by Ripon College second at 66, St. Xavier University third at 91, Waubonsee Community College fourth at 120, Aurora University fifth at 132, Concordia (Wis.) sixth at 165, the Milwaukee School of Engineering seventh at 189, Carthage eighth at 213, Rockford College ninth at 216, Sauk Valley Community College 10th at 274, Benedictine University (Ill.) 11th at 293, Lake Forest College 12th at 361, Maranatha Baptist Bible College 13th at 363, Prairie State College 14th at 420 and Cardinal Stritch University 15th with 430 points.
Aurora's Drew Schmitt took individual honors in the 8K race with a time of 26:35.70. Carthage's B.J. Fuller (Jr., Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) topped the Red Men with a 30th-place finish and a time of 28:05.90. Andrew May (Fr., Racine, Wis./St. Catherines) was 35th at 28:29.10, Derek Hall (Jr., Ingleside, Ill./Fox Lake-Grant Community) 42nd at 28:58.20, Klayton Reed (Jr., Bluffton, Ind./Ossian-Norwell) 50th at 29:18.70 and Kyle White (Fr., Lindenhurst, Ill./Lake Villa-Lakes Community) 56th at 29:34.60.
Also finishing for Carthage were Eddie Schwab So., Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) 63rd at 30:10.10, Marshall Stewart (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) 64th at 30:10.30, Dustin Parker (So., Waterford, Wis./Union) at 30:37.70, Matt Krause (Fr., Northfield, Ill. (Winnetka-New Trier) at 31:15.50, Austin Twomey at 31:40.00, Nick Colona at 32:08.70 and Phil Rood at 34:23.00. Carthage travels to Falcon Heights, Minn., on Saturday, Sept. 25 for the University of Minnesota “Roy Griak Invitational” at the Les Bolstad Golf Course, beginning at 10:40 a.m.
