The Carthage College baseball team (7-4, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked ninth in the March 16 “D3baseball.com” poll, traveled to Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday-Sunday, March 20-21 for three indoor games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. On Saturday, March 20, Carthage lost to No. 1 the University of St. Thomas (Minn., 5-1), 2-1 in 10 innings. On Sunday, March 21, Carthage swept a doubleheader from St. John’s University (Minn., 6-7), 15-1 and 9-7.

In the first St. John’s game, Carthage scored early and often off five Johnnies’ pitchers. The Red Men had a 12-0 lead after four innings and out-hit St. John’s, 17-6. Will Hodges (Jr., Oak Park, Ill./Naperville-North) went three-for-four with a home run and two RBI. Nate Hughes (Sr., Antioch, Ill./Community) went two-for-four with three RBI, Drew Roberts (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) two-for-five with a triple and three RBI, and Josh Albers (Jr., Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) went three-for-five with a double and an RBI. Carthage pitcher Scott Danly (Sr., Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South, 3-2) worked the first five innings of the seven-inning game for the win. Danly allowed one run on four hits and three walks. Billy Montemayor (Jr., Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) pitched the final two innings. Andrew Aebly (2-2) took the loss for the Johnnies.

In the nightcap, St. John’s took a 4-0 lead in the fourth off starter Chris Krepline (Sr., Brillion, Wis./Reedsville). The Red Men tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Josh Albers hit a sacrifice fly. With two outs, Matt Soderlund (Jr., Racine, Wis./Washington Park) doubled in two runs. Billy Herrin (Jr., Galesburg, Ill.) followed with an RBI-single. St. John’s scored three times in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead and chased Krepline out of the game, but Carthage came right back with a five-spot in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-7 lead that held up. With one out, Joey Aiello (So., Libertyville, Ill.) doubled and scored on an error that allowed Nate Hughes to reach second base. Will Hodges singled in Hughes, and Albers doubled in Hodges. With two outs, Matt Soderlund doubled home Albers, and Billy Herrin singled in Soderlund.

Krepline (2-1) was credited with the win despite giving up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and three walks. Nic Jensen (Jr., Appleton, Wis./East) followed, and Chadd Ori (Sr., Antioch, Ill.) pitched a perfect seventh inning for his first collegiate save. Matt Johnson (0-1), the first of three Johnnies pitchers, took the loss. Matt Soderlund went two-for-three with two doubles and three RBI. Joey Aiello (So., Libertyville, Ill.) went three-for-four, and Billy Herrin went two-for-three with two RBI. Carthage travels to Lisle, Ill., on Tuesday, March 23 to play Benedictine University (Ill.) in a 4 p.m. game at the Benedictine Sports Complex .

Augie Schmidt IV Reaches 700 Wins
With a victory over Ohio Wesleyan University on March 6, Carthage College baseball coach Augie Schmidt IV will became only the 17th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the 700-victory plateau.
Carthage Turns on the Lights
Carthage added lights to its baseball facility in April 2010.  Assistant coach Cory Everts flipped the switch in the bottom of the eighth inning of an April 24 game versus Augustana College (Ill.), marking the first-ever use of the bulbs in a game situation.
L.J. Marx Reaches 100 Wins
Carthage men's volleyball coach L.J. Marx won his 100th career match on April 9 with a 3-0 win over Fontbonne University in the semfinals of the M-III Volleyball Conference Tournamrnt in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Bosko Djurickovic
Carthage men's basketball coach Bosko Djurickovic’s CCIW winning percentage entering the 2009-10 season (.663, 224-114) is the sixth-best in the 63-year history of the league, and his 224 wins placed him first among active conference coaches.
Ben Schroeder Hits a Hole-in-One

Red Men men's golfer Ben Schroeder scored Carthage’s first-ever hole-in-one on April 24, 2010 at the Lawrence University Spring Invitational at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Hortonville, Wis.  Schroeder aced the 151-yard fifth hole with an 8-iron.

Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Paul Smith, a member of Carthage’s inaugural men’s soccer team in 1981, was inducted into the Wisconsin Soccer Association Hall of Fame in March 2010. A native of Racine, Wis., Smith was co-captain and team MVP in 1981 and set a Carthage game record that season, which still stands, by collecting four assists against Milton College on Oct. 21. Smith is currently the outdoors editor of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Red Men's 1,000th Basketball Win
With an 85-60 win over Concordia University (Wis.) on Nov. 28, Carthage won its 1,000th men's basketball game.  The program began in 1907.
Kent Dernbach
Former Carthage basketball player Kent Dernbach (2002-03) is currently the Northern Illinois University Director of Men’s Basketball Operations. Dernbach held the same post at George Mason University from 2007 to 2009.
Little All-Americans

The Associated Press has named 16 Carthage football players "Little All-Americans" since 1938, including punter Tyler Funk, a 2009 honoree.

First NFL Playoff Game
John “Popeye” Wager, ‘31, was a lineman for the 1932 NFL Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans, who played the Chicago Bears in the first-ever NFL post-season game.  The Spartans finished the regular season in a first-place tie with the Bears, whose owner, George Halas, had a playoff game scheduled and moved from Wrigley Field, then the Bears’ home turf, to an indoor contest at the Chicago Stadium.
