The Carthage College women's lacrosse team (0-1) opened its inaugural season on Tuesday, March 9 with a 15-9 loss to Whittier College (2-2) at Memorial Stadium in Whittier, Calif. Whittier jumped out to an 11-5 first-half lead. The Lady Reds made it a five-point game in the second period, 13-8, but the Poets went on to win by six, 15-9.
Whittier out-shot Carthage, 39-23. Carolyn Mukal topped the Poets with eight goals, while Emily had two goals and two assists. Mary Handrahan (So., Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) and Olivia Nino (Fr., Pleasanton Calif./Foothill) each collected three goals for the Lady Reds., while goalkeeper Jennifer John (So., Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) had 11 saves. The Whittier contest kicked off a four-game Carthage spring trip, which continues with a Wednesday, March 10 match at Pomona-Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif., beginning at 6 p.m., PST.
