The Carthage College women's swimming team (4-4 dual-meet record) won the Saturday, Jan. 30 Wisconsin Private College Swimming Championship at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage won the six team event with 288 points, followed by Carroll University second at 140, Lawrence University third at 102, Beloit College fourth at 66, the Marquette University club team fifth at 38 and Ripon College sixth with 35 points. The state title was the eighth in a row for the Lady Reds and their 10th overall.
Amanda Croix (Jr., Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) won three events, all with meet-record times, taking first place in the 50 freestyle (meet-record 23.81), the 100 freestyle (meet-record 53.94) and the 100 backstroke (meet-record 1:10.10). Courtney Boothe (Jr., Moline, Ill.) won the 500 freestyle (5:37.01) while taking second place in the 200 butterfly (2:30.37). Lisa Tiltges (Jr., St. Charles, Ill./Aurora-Rosary) won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.64) and finished second in the 50 freestyle (25.94). Nicole Cleveland (Jr., Elmhurst, Ill./.York) took first place in the 1,650 freestyle (19:27.66).
Carthage collected second-place finishes from Jensena Paul (So., Portage, Wis.) in the 100 backstroke (1:03.62), Alyssa Messina (Sr., Medinah, Ill./Roselle-Lake Park) in the 200 freestyle (2:03.95), Amy Mueller (Jr., Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.51), Michelle Mulhall (Sr., Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) in the 200 breaststroke (2:37.52) and Maggie Knowles (Fr., Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) in the 400 individual medley (4:56.70).
Carthage's winning 200 medley relay team of Paul, Mulhall, Megan Szabo (Fr., Valparaiso, Ind./Portage) and Messina set a meet record with a time of 1:55.75, and the Lady Reds' 200 freestyle relay team of Tiltges, Messina, Sammy Jo Mahler (Jr., Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) and Croix won the event with a meet-record 1:40.68. Carthage is idle until playing host to the Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 18-20 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Swimming Championship at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. (10:30 a.m./6 p.m. each day).
