Carthage Women's Tennis Sweeps Augustana (Ill.) and Elmhurst on Sept. 5

Gina Klein Improves to 4-0 on Sept. 5 vs. Augustana (Ill.) and Elmhurst
The Carthage College women’s tennis team (3-1, 3-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) swept a Saturday, Sept. 5 double-dual match at the Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage defeated CCIW-opponent Augustana College (Ill., 2-2, 0-1), 7-2, before blanking conference-opponent Elmhurst College (1-2, 0-2), 9-0. Carthage’s Gina Klein (Sr., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South, 4-0) won both of her number-one singles matches. Klein defeated Jenna Richardson from Augustana College (Ill.), 6-1, 6-0, and won over Virginia Dallman from Elmhurst College, 6-2, 6-1. Hollis McPeek (So., Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest, 3-1) won both of her number-two singles, as did Kristina Naidicz (So., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper/UW-Oshkosh, 2-0) at number-three singles, Ashley Morgan (Sr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area, 3-1) at number-four singles and Stephanie Zundl (So., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown, 3-1) at number-five singles. Amanda Bizub (So. Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead, 2-2) split at number-six singles. The Lady Reds’ number-one doubles team of Klein and McPeek (4-0) won both contests, as did the number-two team of Naidicz and Beth Kaufman (Sr., Barrington, Ill.). The number-three tandem of Morgan and Bizub (2-1) split.

Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02. Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill. Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches. Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009. Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
