Carthage Women's Soccer Wins Third Annual "Battle on the Border"

The Carthage College women’s soccer team (2-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) played host to and won the third annual “Battle on the Border” tournament on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 4-6 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. On Friday, Sept. 4, Carthage edged St. Norbert College (0-2), 2-1, with Concordia University (Wis., 2-1) defeating Viterbo University (1-3) by a 5-2 margin. On Saturday, Sept. 5, the Lady Reds edged Clarke College (0-2), 3-2, with St. Norbert (1-2) nipping Viterbo (1-4), 3-2. The tournament concluded on Sunday, Sept. 6 with Clarke (1-2) shutting out Concordia (Wis., 2-2), 2-0, at Kenosha Tremper High School.

In Carthage’s decision over Clarke, the Lady Reds took a 1-0 halftime lead, thanks to Sarah Scardamaglia’s (Jr., West Chicago, Ill.) goal, assisted by Rachel Jason (Fr., Deerfield, Ill.), at 10:00. Clarke tied the match with the first of two goals by Kelsey Gleich at 63:05. Carthage’s Jen Petrosky (So., Hanover Park, Ill./Carol Stream-Glenbard North) scored at 76:13 to put the Lady Reds up, 2-1. Gleich’s second goal tied the game, 2-2, at 76:13, but Jason scored the game-winner at 84:20, assisted by Debbie Kozlowski. Angela Spinelli worked the entire game in goal for Carthage.

Did You Know...
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
