Men's Soccer Defeats Viterbo and Ties Clarke at Sept. 4-5 "Battle on the Border"

The Carthage College men’s soccer team (1-1-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) played host to the third annual “Battle on the Border” tournament on Friday-Saturday at Art Keller Field.  On Friday, Sept. 4, Carthage blanked Viterbo University (2-1), 3-0, with St. Norbert College (2-0) upending Clarke College (1-2) by a 6-1 margin.  On Saturday, Sept. 5, St. Norbert (3-0) defeated Viterbo (2-2), 2-1, with Carthage playing Clarke (1-2-1) to a 0-0 tie.  Under tournament rules, no overtime periods are played.  Carthage goal keeper Aaron Dirck (So., East Moline, Ill./United Township) played the full 90 minutes.  In Carthage’s 3-0 win over Viterbo University on Sept. 4, the Red Men took a 1-0 halftime lead behind the first of two goals by Josh Khoshbin (Jr., Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) at 12:42, assisted by both Rafal Zalewski and Aleks Urosevic.  His second goal came at the 65:009 mark and was assisted by Joey Zilisch.  Cesar Castanon (Fr., Des Plaines, Ill./Park Ridge-Maine East) tallied the third Carthage goal at 89:00, assisted by both Vladimir Schlageter and Kosta Minchev.  Taao Scarnato (Fr., Lake Zurich, Ill.) was in goal for the Red Men the entire game.

Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
