Carthage Women's Tennis Opens Season with a Split vs. UW-Whitewater and Illinois Wesleyan
Gina Klein Sweeps Two Number-One Singles Matches

The Carthage College women’s tennis team (1-1, 1-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opened its 2009-10 season on Sept. 2 with a double-dual match at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Carthage lost to the host-Warhawks (1-0), 7-2, before defeating CCIW-opponent Illinois Wesleyan University (0-1, 0-1 CCIW), 7-2. Carthage’s Gina Klein (Sr., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South, 2-0) won both of her number-one singles matches. Klein defeated the Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Ingrid Stensvaag, 2-6, 6-4, 10-5; and won over the Illinois Wesleyan’s Helen Alex, 6-4, 6-3. Hollis McPeek (So., Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest, 1-1) lost to the Warhawks but won over the Titans at number-two singles, as did Ashley Morgan (Sr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area, 1-1) at number-three singles, Stephanie Zundl (So., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown, 1-1) at number-four singles and Amanda Bizub (So. Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead, 1-1) at number-five singles. Alex Maniscalo (Jr., Lemont, Ill., 0-2) lost both of her number-six singles matches.
The Lady Reds’ number-one doubles team of Klein and McPeek (2-0) won both contests. The number-two team of Morgan and Zundl (0-2) lost both matches, while the number-three tandem of Bizub and Kaitlyn Farrell (Jr., Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township, 1-1) split. The Lady Reds play host to a Saturday, Sept. 5 double-dual match at the Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent Augustana College (Ill., 2-1, 0-0) at 9 a.m. The Vikings take on conference-opponent Elmhurst College (1-0, 0-0) at Noon, with the Lady Reds paying the Bluejays at 3 p.m.

Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02. Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill. Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches. Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009. Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
