Carthage Women's Tennis Plays at Sept. 25-27 ITA Tournament
Gina Klein and Hollis McPeek Reach Doubles Quarterfinals

The Carthage College women’s tennis team (7-4, 4-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) traveled to St. Peter, Minn., on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 25-26 to play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Midwest Regional Tournament at Gustavus Adolphus College.

 

In first-round singles play on Sept. 25, Michelle Daciolas from Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated Carthage’s Gina Klein (Sr., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South, 5-5), 6-4, 6-7, 10-5.  The Lady Reds’ Hollis McPeek (So., Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest, 6-4) defeated Marian CheLeon from the College of St. Scholastica by default.  Beth Kaufman (Sr., Barrington, Ill., 4-2) defeated St. Scholastica’s Callie Conda, 6-1, 6-2.  Coe College’s Hillary Allen defeated Kristina Naidicz (So., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper/UW-Oshkosh, 6-4), 6-4, 6-3.  In second-round action, also on Sept. 25, Carlton College’s Kathryn Schmidt eliminated McPeek (6-5), 6-2, 6-1, and Sam Frank from Gustavus Adolphus eliminated Kaufman (4-3), 6-1, 7-6. 

 

In first-round doubles action on Sept. 25, Klein and McPeek (8-4) defeated Baily Edwards and Rebecca Snyder from St. Mary’s University, 8-6, while Kaufman and Naidicz (5-2) defeated Katie McDonald and Jenny Marayama from Wisconsin-La Crosse, 8-3.  In second-round doubles on Sept. 26, Klein and McPeek (9-4) defeated Macalester College’s Stephanie Lee and Amanda Wenzel, while Kaufman and Naidicz (5-3) lost to Coe College’s Andrea Schupbach and Michelle Schupbach, 8-6.  In the doubles quarterfinals on Sept. 26, Klein and McPeek (9-5) fell to Megan Gaard and Ali Oneal from Gustavus Adolphus by an 8-5 margin.

Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
