Carthage Women's Golf Ties for Eighth Place at Sept. 26-27 DePauw "Small College Classic"

Carthage tied for eighth place at the Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 26-27 DePauw University “Small College Classic” at the Deer Creek Golf Course in Clayton, Ind. Saturday’s first round was suspended, due to lightning, and was completed on Sunday, followed by the second and final round. St. Mary’s College (Ind.) won the 16-team event with a 315-320-635 team score, 18 strokes ahead of second-place DePauw at 327-326-653. Olivet College was third at 333-328-661, followed by Franklin College fourth at 326-338-664, Walsh University fifth at 333-339-672, Centre College sixth at 344-344-688, Wittenberg University seventh at 346-355-701, Carthage at 358-353-711 tied for eighth with Hanover College at 348-363-711, North Central College 10th at 355-361-716, Transylvania University 11th at 359-372-731, Trine University 12th at 366-378-744, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 13th at 378-370-748, Manchester College 14th at 374-385-759, Anderson University 15th at 391-391-782 and Kalamazoo College 16th with a 394-402-796 mark.
 
Martyna Mierzwa from St. Mary’s College (Ind.) took medalist honors with a 76-78-154, while teammate Natalie Matuszak was second at 80-77-157. Carthage’s Amy Binstein (Jr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) tied for 27th place at 87-84-171, Katie Ramirez (Jr., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale-South) tied for 43rd at 87-91-178, Tabby Bell (Fr., Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) tied for 48th at 92-86-180, Heidi Hoffman (Jr., Appleton, Wis./North) tied for 53rd at 92-90-182, and Julie Klawitter (Fr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) tied for 70th place with a 96-97-193. Brooke Mix (So., Westfield, Ind.), playing as an individual, tied for 53rd place with an 89-93-182, and Aubrie Morano (So., North Prairie, Wis./Wales-Kettle Moraine), also playing as an individual, tied for 68th place at 97-94-191.

Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
