The Carthage College men’s cross country team (24-19) finished 16th at the Saturday, Sept. 26 University of Minnesota “Roy Griak Invitational” at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn. Wisconsin-La Crosse won the 35-team NCAA Division III portion of the event with 48 points, followed by Wisconsin-Platteville second at 81, Emory University third at 113, Wisconsin-Oshkosh fourth at 172, Wisconsin-Whitewater fifth at 175, Wisconsin-Eau Claire sixth at 210, St. Olaf College seventh at 281, Hamline University eighth at 317, Lakehead University ninth at 323, Wartburg College 10th at 337, Luther College 11th at 351, Augsburg College and Wisconsin-River Falls tied for 12th at 373 each, Bethel University (Minn.) 14th at 403, Wisconsin-Stout 15th at 430, Carthage 16th at 449, Coe College 17th at 450, Carleton College 18th at 465, Gustavus Adolphus College 19th at 496, Simpson College 20th at 566, Macalester College 21st at 578, Wisconsin-Superior 22nd at 606, Benedictine University (Ill.) 23rd at 640, Ripon College 24th at 661, Concordia University (Wis.) 25th at 674, St. Norbert College 26th at 695, the College of St. Scholastica 27th at 753, St. Mary’s University (Minn.) 28th at 770, the Milwaukee School of Engineering 29th at 854, North Central University 30th at 881, Lawrence University and Minnesota-Morris tied for 31st at 912 each, Piedmont College 33rd at 1011, Northland College 34th at 1079 and Crown College 35th with 1119 points.
Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Zach Wilhelmy won the 8K race with a time of 25:27.60. Carthage’s Jake Mahaffey (Fr., Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) paced the Red Men with a 72nd-place finish and a time of 27:33.30. Justin Sebens (Jr., Seymour, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) was 79th at 27:44.00, Grant Seiler (Fr., Greenfield, Wis./Milwaukee-Whitnall) 93rd at 28:00.40, Tyler Wishau (Sr., Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) 95th at 28:03.80 and Josh Keck (Fr., Minooka, Ill.) 110th at 28:13.60. Also finishing for Carthage were Alex Nelson (Fr. Red Wing, Minn.) at 28:33.30 and Josh Solorio (Jr., West Allis, Wis./Milwaukee-West Allis Central) at 28:56.80.

Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches. Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02. Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill. Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009. Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
