Carthage Men's Golf Opens Fall Season by Tying for Third at Robert Morris "Fall Classic"

The Carthage College men’s golf team (7-2-1) opened the fall portion of its 2009-10 season by tying for third place at the Friday-Saturday, Sept. 18-19 Robert Morris University (Ill.) “Fall Classic” at the Midlane Golf Course in Wadsworth, Ill.  The University of St. Francis (Ill.) won the 15-team event with a 309-305-614 team score, six strokes ahead of second-place Bethel College (Ind.) at 318-302-620.  Carthage at 320-305-625 tied with Viterbo University at 314-311-625 for third place, followed by Olivet Nazarene University fifth at 316-316-628, the Carthage junior varsity team sixth at 325-310-635, Parkland Community College seventh at 327-309-636, the University of St. Francis (Ind.) eighth at 330-312-642, North Park University ninth at 334-309-643, Holy Cross College (Ind.) 10th at 331-315-646, the Olivet junior varsity team 11th at 331-322-653, Robert Morris (Ill.) 12th at 347-315-662, Judson University (Ill.) 13th at 331-338-669, Calumet College of St. Joseph 14th at 342-349-691 and the Judson (Ill.) junior varsity team 15th with a 414-426-840 mark.
 
North Park University’s Blake Blumenstock at 80-66-146 shared medalist honors at the Sept. 18-19 Robert Morris University “Fall Classic” with Olivet Nazarene’s Seth Doran at 74-72-146.  Carthage’s Kyle Bahnick (Fr., Inverness, Ill./Palatine-Fremd) tied for 10th at 81-73-154, Billy Stone (So., Libertyville, Ill.) tied for 12th at 81-74-155, Donnie Langland (Fr., Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) tied for 18th at 80-77-157, Bobby O’Neill (Jr., Mokena, Ill./Frankfort—Lincoln-Way East) tied for 25th ay 78-81-159, and Anthony Milano (Sr., Geneva, Ill.) tied for 38th place with an81-82-163.  For the Red Men’s junior varsity squad, Andy Wojciechowicz (Jr., Racine, Wis./Kenosha-Bradford) tied for 12th at 77-78-155, Matt Gates (Fr., Black River Falls, Wis.) tied for 30th at 79-82-161, Dan Parks (So., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) finished 37th at 84-78-162, Scott Shiple (So., Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) tied for 38th at 85-78-163, and Joe Torasco (Jr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) tied for 48th place with an 89-76-165.  Four other Red Men played as individuals.  Ben Schroeder (Fr., Ivanhoe, Ill./Mundelein) finished fifth at 76-74-150, Nate Moore (Fr., Moline, Ill.) tied for 15th place with a 76-80-156, Nick Vranes (Jr., Greendale, Wis.) tied for 38th with an 89-74-163, and Brendon Jones (So., St. Charles, Ill./West Chicago) tied for 43rd place with an 86-78-164.

Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
