Klayton Reed 22nd at Concordia (Wis.) Invitational
The Carthage College men’s cross country team (5-4) opened its 2009 season on Saturday, Sept. 19 with a sixth-place finish at the Concordia University (Wis.) Invitational in Mequon, Wis.  Waubonsee College won the 13-team event with 37 points, followed by St. Norbert College second at 68, Concordia (Wis.) third at 94, Rockford College fourth at 109, Concordia University (Chicago) fifth at 148, Carthage sixth at 152, Benedictine University (Ill.) seventh at 182, Lake Forest College eighth at 231, Maranatha Baptist Bible College ninth at 245, Elgin Community College 10th at 261, Dominican University (Ill) 11th at 286, Prairie State College 12 at 337 and Cardinal Stritch University 13th with 343 points.  Eamon McKenna from Mount Mary College won the 8K race with a time of 26:07.  

Carthage’s Klayton Reed (So., Bluffton, Ind./Ossian-Norwell) finished 22nd at 28:21, Marshall Stewart (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) 26th at 28:35, Joe Stubenvoll (Sr., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) 33rd at 28:53, Dustin Parker (Fr., Waterford, Wis./Union) 53rd at 30:13, and Bill Quade (Jr., Lindenhurst, Ill./Lake Villa-Lakes Community) took 64th place with a time of 30:44.  Also finishing for the Red Men were Kenton Rauwerdink (Sr., Hingham, Wis./Oostburg) 65th at 30:46, Phillip Rood (So., Forreston, Ill.) 85th at 31:53, Nick Colona (Jr., East Alton, Ill./East Alton-Wood River) 90th at 32:23, Shelby Engle (Fr., Armada, Mich.) 101st at 34:11 and Anthony Sterk (Fr., Sterling, Ill./Newman Central Catholic) 105th at 34:55.  Carthage travels to Falcon Heights, Minn., on Saturday, Sept. 26 for the University of Minnesota “Roy Griak Invitational” at the Les Bolstad Golf Course, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
