Carthage Men's Soccer Drops Season-Opener, 7-0, at NCAA II Rollins on Sept. 1

The Carthage College men’s soccer team (0-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opened its 2009 season on Sept. 1 with a 7-0 loss to NCAA Division II Rollins College (2-0) the Barker Family Stadium at Cahall-Sandspur Field in Winter Park, Fla. The Tars opened their season on Friday with a 1-0 win over Embry-Riddle University. In Tuesday’s contest, Rollins opened up a 4-0 lead at halftime behind goals by Adam New at 7:18, Dennis Chin at 8:05 and 24:17 and J.D. Gruenwald at 32:38. The Tars tacked on three more second-period goals, with Chin scoring at 50:30, Nick Sowers at 70:48 and at Jack Clifford at 85:27. Carthage plays host to the “Battle on the Border” tournament on Friday-Saturday at Art Keller Field. The Red Men take on Viterbo University on Friday at 5 p.m. and Clarke College on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10

Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.

Coach Brady Lindsley

Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009. Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.

Coach Leanne Ulmer

Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches. Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"

The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02. Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill. Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
