Carthage Women's Volleyball Sweeps a Sept..11 Triangular at UW-Platteville

The Carthage College women’s volleyball team (6-0, 0-0- College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked fifth in the Sept. 8 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, swept both ends of a Friday, Sept. 11 triangular at Wisconsin-Platteville.  Carthage shut out Coe College (1-6), 3-0, and blanked Wisconsin-Platteville (3-4), also 3-0.  The Lady Reds’ winning set scores over the Kohawks were 25-12, 25-13 and 25-14, and their winning scores over the Pioneers were 25-23, 26-24 and 25-19.  In the Coe match, Lauren Dembkowski (So., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) had 15 kills and hit. 323, while Michelle Madjea (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) had 13 kills and hit .400.  In the Wisconsin-Platteville contest, Madeja collected 21 kills and hit .277.  Carthage opens its CCIW-schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 15 by playing host to North Central College in a 7 p.m. match at Tarble Arena.

Did You Know...
Coach Leanne Ulmer
Head women's volleyball coach Leanne Ulmer entered the 2009 season with a .759 winning percentage over seven seasons, which ranks 12th among active NCAA Division III coaches.  Ulmer has won six CCIW titles in nine years at Carthage, inclduing a  shared title in 2004 and outright titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Carthage's "Mr. Touchdown"
The last living member of Carthage's first football team, the 1895 squad, was William Simmons, "02.  Simmons was honored at a 1958 Carthage game for scoring the Red Men's first-ever home touchdown in an 18-0 win over Quincy University on Nov. 28, 1895 in Carthage, Ill.  Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.
Carthage's 24th Varsity Sports Begins in 2009-10
Carthage launches its 24th varsity sport in 2009-10, as the women's lacrosse team begins varsity play with a March 9-13 trip to Southern California.
Coach Brady Lindsley
Carthage women's tennis coach Brady Lindsley won his 200th career match in the fall of 2009.  Lindsley, with a 204-79 record heading into the spring 2010 portion of the season, has been named CCIW "Women's Tennis Coach of the Year" three times.
